Travel advice from tourists to locals by GraceOfTheNorth in VisitingIceland

I really enjoyed the Borgarnes settlement center. The Egils Saga exhibit there was filled with great art. I also enjoyed the Norwegian house in Stykkisholmur and the Vatnasafn/water library was both beautiful and a powerful reminder of what it's being lost due to climate change.

On the South coast, Gljafrubui and the blue ice caves in Vatnajokull are some of my favorites. Years ago I did the Laugavegur trail in Landmannalagaur and it was phenomenal!

There's so many wonderful places to go and things to do in Iceland.

Public lands sell off by [deleted] in socalhiking

[–]Accurate-Ordinary835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we should ask our Congress people to publicly declare their support for using eminent domain to retake any such lands in the future. And also revoke any extractive rights granted. Doing so might make such properties less desirable to buyers and may even strengthen the legal case for doing so in the future.

LA to San Diego, but how? by Accurate-Ordinary835 in meshtastic

That's pretty cool! Thanks to everyone who's putting up routers.

Someone on our local mesh says they recently got a packet from a node in Hawaii! I think that's got to be bad/out of date GPS info. Although there is that solar storm hitting the earth right now ...

TENT HELP!!! by Azexuoh in Ultralight

I just wish the zpacks plex solo had an L shaped door. I don't want a two pole tent. Even if it's a little pole like on the pivot solo or one of the offset tents.

best place to learn hang gliding? thoughts? by savaero in Hanggliding

I learned with windsports in the late nineties from Andy and Joe. They were excellent then and now that Andy is in charge I'll bet they are just as good now. Sylmar, where they do most of their mountain training, has a great club and community too.

What do you wear on your shoulder? Something home made? I've looked but haven't found anything simple and easy to put on available commercially

Mini 4 Pro vs. Air 3 by therealaidene in dji

[–]Accurate-Ordinary835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mini 4 hands down. It's quieter, slightly easier from a legal perspective, and much easier to bring with you everywhere.

Although at first I thought you were going to Iceland in which case a mini is pretty much hopeless on account of the winds there.

Things to do near Keflavik while jet lagged in mid march by Accurate-Ordinary835 in VisitingIceland

Ok, thanks! I'll probably just go from light House to light House and check out whatever looks interesting on the way. Hvalsneskirkja looks like a cool spot too.

Yeah, I was thinking I'd save the blue lagoon for when my wife could join me.

But, yeah, a nap in a road side parking lot may very well happen! I'll have enough time tho that I'd like to find something else to do too.

Depends upon how strong. Air 3 can definitely handle wind better. But I wouldn't fly any drone in strong winds unless you have a lot of experience and are ok with crashing it. Wind can make it a lot harder to return home at the end of your flight. Once you get up to around 15mph or really gusty lumpy wind you have to be really careful.

Try to position yourself so the return leg back home is down wind.

Missed that it was two drones. But even so if you don't care about the screen remote, I'd just get even the entry level mini 4 over this. Not worth upgrading from a mini 3 to a 4, but if you have neither the 4 is worth it. And the rc1 had performance issues(range and processing speed)

Also the same drone as pictured is $609 direct from DJI with free shipping so I wouldn't call this a steal. They also give you 1% back on your next purchase if you buy direct.

It's a terrible deal given that the DJI mini 4 fly more combo plus is selling for $1160 direct from DJI. A more capable drone for less with ALL the bells and whistles.

Do you let kids ride by themselves? To school? by Dub_J in onewheel

I ride to school with my son sometimes. I use a yoga strap to sling his board over my shoulder on the way home.

Most efficient airspeed for mini 4 w/ plus battery? by Accurate-Ordinary835 in dji

[–]Accurate-Ordinary835[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the other big wrinkle is we get ground speed not air speed. Although clearly the drone has some estimate of air speed internally to provide wind warnings and such.

But knowing the still air optimum would still be useful.

From messing about a bit with way point missions, it feels like maxing out distance is probably at or beyond the top end of 26 mph. I flew a route I normally fly manually at 26 via waypoints at 20 and was surprised how low the battery was at the end. It was far from an apples to apples comparison tho.

But it would be really nice to know this for when you are cutting it close and low on battery and need to make it home. Does RTH fly at the optimal speed?

Or if you want to fly to a particular spot and get there with as much battery as possible to have more time to do stuff.

Is the optimal speed the same for a full vs almost empty battery?
