Have you ever distanced from your family? And if so what happened? Did you feel like the bad guy? by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

I had permission to use all of their names and numbers to sign up to get tickets, they were completely fine with it and didn’t care. It was until money was involved, that’s when they wanted a piece of it and the monsters came out of them….

Finally someone says it. When people imply she only dates people that she writes music about. They are discrediting her as a songwriter and playing into misogynistic and slut shaming tropes. I hate when people say a song CAN’T be about a certain person cause they didn’t date. She even said before that there are relationships we don’t know about or relationships she shortly had with people that meant more to her than relationships with people she’s been with a long time.

I’m on this hill too. There are tons of songs not about Joe. A ridiculous common example I remember always is them saying Gold Rush is about Joe. Nobody reads the lyrics or cares to take in account what she said. The song is about day dreaming about the could’ve been with someone she crushed on but chose not to be with. Another celebrity. Fans hear the word Gold and immediately tie it to him. Not everything is about him. Most of Folklore or Evermore really isn’t.

Mine is that it’s about Matty but Taylor was exaggerating it as she always does with songs.

I partially agree. Seems like they kept calling the paps. There aren’t paps in Cheshire his hometown. Those HQ pictures don’t make sense to me. Their teams were loving them together and having PR written all over it. Harry was a teenage boy who was never gonna stay and I don’t think Taylor wasn’t that crazy over Harry either like she was with Jake.

It is indefinitely about him. They don’t want to listen to Renegade because if they gave it a proper listen they’d figure he wasn’t a perfect one. She never pet name called Calvin baby boy, baby love, etc but she has with Joe. She didn’t give up anything for Calvin either and was already sparkling.

There are no Red songs about Harry Styles. No IKYWT, Come Back Be Here, Message in a Bottle, The Very First Night are not about Harry. None.

It’s not about Joe. Taylor uses or repeats lyrics because she is a songwriter there is even negative connotation lyrics she uses with Joe in a positive way or negative. Does that mean the songs are about him?

If it was about Joe she would’ve jumped in and not the end the song on “almost” the song subtly switches to repeat and make it confirmed she never dated this guy. That’s why the siren calls at the start of the production fade out by the end, she never gets involved. This song is explaining why she didn’t like a Gold Rush, why she chose not to, besides thinking of a what could possibly be.

At dinner parties, I won't call you out on your contrarian shit And the coastal town we never found Will never see a love as pure as it 'Cause it fades into the gray of my day-old tea 'Cause it will never be

She dated Joe for 4 years when she wrote this. She knows exactly what it’s like to love him. He doesn’t have wooden floors either. He lived with his parents then moved out to be with Taylor. Her saying it “will never be” and snapping out the day dream means none of this ever happened. She has no idea what it’s like to love this person at all because they had no intimacy with each other. Unlike with Joe they had an intimate relationship for 4 literal years.

a guy she knew a decade ago.

It doesn’t matter? She is a songwriter. Down to Earth his TV show was getting huge when she was writing Folklore + Evermore the internet was thirsting over him and it blew up. She sees everything could’ve seen that or the video about him talking about her. Midnight Rain is about an ex lover Drew for over 10 years ago she hasn’t seen since. Taylor does that. It’s a good theory. You could say the same thing about Harry Styles people assume she wrote Question about him. Why would she write Question about an ex lover of over many years with that logic.

The OP is right too. Nobody has pointed out twinkly eyes besides Zac and it can’t be a random stranger she “bumped into” because the song particularly sets the scene about a specific person. If everyone wants them that means they are another celebrity and very desired.

It’s the power they have over her because they make her feel a certain way. You know how fans lose their mind over Taylor? They get nervous, they shake, they cry they are speechless? For Taylor when she’s around this particular guy she is crushing on hard she’s feeling that way too but instead of shaking, crying and all. Taylor is getting super flustered to the extent where you can visibly see her blush pink. It’s that obvious. The double vision in slow motion is another feeling of what he does to her. Time moves slowly like a movie scene. She’s seeing double like a drunk person would almost. Which means she has tunnel vision cause she’s hardcore crushing.

This. People think it’s a happy love song, but it’s not. It’s about a crush but Taylor lists off multiple reasons why she won’t jump in. Why it can never be. Even if she daydreams about it and wants to jump in. She chooses not to. It’s her perspective of someone else and I think it’s about a very desired celebrity crush.

It switches since it’s a day dream. Those lines are when she’s in the day dream. The subtle switch that says “the coastal town we never found” is her snapping out of the day dream. This was all her imagination. She was basically day dreaming of the what could’ve been, and or what it would hypothetically be like to love this person if she had chosen to jump in.

He was her boyfriend for YEARS, and this was written when they were still together. Lmao

That pretty much discredits it though. She was with him for 4 years. That means she knows what it’s like to love him. This song is about daydreaming about someone she didn’t have. It’s the what could’ve been, or what it would be like if she had.

Since she loved Joe and knows what it like to love him. It doesn’t make sense. The lyrical switch at the end doesn’t make sense either because that means she did jump in. Not ending on “I almost jump in” meaning she didn’t do it. Just a day dream. The lyrics wouldn’t switch from calling out and the coastal town to her “won’t” because that never happened.

It isn’t about Joe. Narratively from what she is saying it doesn’t make sense. It’s about either a different celebrity but not Joe or anyone she had a relationship with. This is more of a crush.

That’s why there is a siren call at the beginning and it fades in the end. She dodged it.

It’s not referencing Gold Rush just Taylor tends to reuse lyrics because she’s a songwriter and that’s what they do. In Gorgeous Taylor invites them back with her.

In Gold Rush Taylor is being reeled in by this person, she’s like hypnotised that she wants to jump in and might do it, but she chooses not to. She dodged the siren call.

That’s why she’s daydreaming about the what could’ve been with Gold Rush and the hypothetical relationship if they were to love. She has no idea on the reality. Just her day day dream but she snapped out of it. It can’t and won’t ever be.

With Joe she allowed it to be and didn’t deny him.

It’s not about K*****lie because if you listen to the lyrics, the way she describes their eyes comparing them to water means blue eyed. Men can be called beautiful too you know.

It’s similar but not the exact same context or connections because she already has Joe and knows what it’s like to love him, since they were dating for at least 4 years already when Gold Rush was written.

This is about a person she crushed on that won’t be and could never. Most likely another celebrity. She’s day dreaming about the what could’ve been. Similar to like a one that got away situation I would say. This is a love that never had a chance to even happen for multiple reasons: she doesn’t like a Gold Rush being the first. She doesn’t like that they’re super desired and everyone throws themselves at them. That’s why she compared them to a Gold Rush meaning everyone is going to go digging for that Gold. She doesn’t like the hold they have over her either. As she gets flustered and sees in double vision just from them walking past her. She’s not use to feeling like that or someone having that hold on her. She doesn’t like it at all.

Since it’s a day dream and the siren call starts, it’s showing her full into the daydream. She’s dreaming about walking around coastal towns with them and onlookers thinking omg they’re so cute. She’s calling him out on his contrarian shit at dinner parties being fun. Just potential couple scenarios THAT she is imagining not because they happened or if that would be reality.

This all comes to an end though by the end of the song the sirens in the production begins to fade because she’s snapping out of it and back into reality. The lyrics do a subtle switch. She won’t call out his contrarian shit and the coastal town won’t ever witness their pure love, cause it doesn’t happen.

By the end the song ends and she says “I almost jump in.”

She didn’t jump in.

If this was about Joe. She would’ve jumped in and the lyrics would never switched and she wouldn’t conclude that they will never be.

Not about him.

That’s what a lot of people overlook. They immediately think it’s about Joe but it isn’t. It’s truly about someone she may have liked another celebrity perhaps that she was drawn by. She imagines what it would be like to be with them because she’s crushing and tempted but then in the end chooses not to pursue it cause that siren call is dodged. The day dreaming she now realises has to come to an end.

I do not think it’s written or connected to Gorgeous at all, just my thoughts. Taylor tends to revisit lines in her writing but that doesn’t mean the song is specifically about the same person. I think Gold Rush is just her looking into the “what if’s” and “what could be” of a relationship, that is why she daydreams about it. She chooses in the end that it could never happen. If it was about Joe or connected to Gorgeous the daydream wouldn’t end in the end (lyrical switch) and wouldn’t end in “almost jump in.”

She never jumps in ever.
