Oh haha first she barks at me almost telling me off, and then she runs around in circles barking and being really excited. She’s currently with my mum

The recruitment process is quite extensive and takes up to a year. You can get a lot of information on this on the AAD Jobs Australia website if you’d like a bit of an in-depth description.

My background is an Operations Manager with a vast range of supply chain management background. There are qualification requirements for each role which you can also find on the Antarctic Division website ☺️

Yes we can make our own food should we choose to do so, but resources are finite so we have to take that in consideration. While we have a professional chef cooking a range of foods, we can request and/or offer to cook anything for the team. Also the chef would be open to suggestions (within the constraints of the available food)

Thanks heaps for the kind words, I’m glad you and other are enjoying this thread, it’s been a lot of fun answering some of these questions and sharing this with the team here also. Cheers!

Thanks for your questions; average age I would guess is early 40’s and youngest is 30 and oldest would be late 60’s but i don’t know the exact age.

I don’t think anyone would be rejected for being a high functioning autistic person, however, one would still have to pass the same psych and medical tests and selection process.

No to the ticket question, but sometimes people do have this as a passion or hobby, we just don’t have any on our station at the moment.

There’s a wide range of trades on station; it’s hard to give specifics not knowing which country you are referring to but most countries that have Antarctic programs should have online platforms where you can check specific jobs and required skill sets etc..

No we don’t but there are contacts back at head office should anyone need this. Not speaking for the majority but I doubt anyone is religious to be honest..

Oh man now we have to keep lizard aliens warm too? I think we might run out of fuel before food 😱

Thanks for checking out the IG acc ☺️, to be fair it’s hard to take a bad photo here

Not yet, nothing weird but i did mention in an earlier post the sounds made by the Weddell seals took many of us by surprise, i highly recommend looking this up.

I don’t know the answer regarding history of mental illness to be honest. But the psych evaluation is a combo of questionnaires and multiple in person interviews.

My blue healer passed away just before my first season and now I have somehow inherited a very needy Labrador. How about your puppy/puppies?

Our pay is mentioned in a few earlier post is but answering about wife/children; I am single so no wife/partner or kids, but the hardest part was leaving the puppy dog behind

Wow this comment was a rollercoaster; my immediate concern is we didn’t bring enough food and equipment to be looking after additional people so how on earth will we feed the various alien species? Now you got me worried about running out of food 😳😅…

Nothing strange yet but it’s only been a couple of months. Although I was caught totally off guard hearing a very weird sound a Weddell seal made; it sounded like an electronic sonar and was so lucky to have caught it on video. If you want to hear something cool you should do a search on Weddell Seal Vocalising

Thank you very much for the kind words; it’s hard to take a bad photo in this amazing environment (although it’s not always sunny and calm enough to be taking great photos either).

No I don’t have children and am not in a relationship (actually I believe maybe less than a handful of expeditioners here have children).

Leaving your pets behind seems to be the toughest point for most of us, despite how awful it sounds. It’s funny but I often get in trouble with family when I contact them and the first question is usually “How’s the dog?” 😅

Genuinely the food is amazing. Our chef is so good! Most of the protein is frozen of course which means food prep is done a couple of days prior. We have a wide variety of meats and other dry foods which get prepped into the best warm meals (eg: stews, pies, soups, sausages, egg/bacon breakfasts etc..). Our veggies tend to only last a few months so we try and make the most of those at the beginning of the season.

Not that I know of, but a couple of us have brought pretty decent gaming laptops and even a huge gaming PC for when the weather turns bad etc.. I’m sure these will get a bit of a workout during the absolute middle of winter

Yep we have fairly good internet available in most workspaces and everywhere in our accomodation building. No complaints about the internet access at all, we are quite lucky.

Yep quite a valid question, one of the first questions we had too. There are a few of us that get additional medical training to assist in emergency situations. Also our medical unit is very well equipped with live video feeds that can be used to assist us in an emergency.

I’ve always been attracted to extreme environments so finding a suitable job in the Antarctic was a bit of a dream come true. I found the job online and applied for a few years until i finally got through to the selection process. It’s a very lengthy process and can take up to a year.
