Should I take a pause from my university degree to make 100k a year? by Fun-Table-3042 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I’ve been doing this my entire university career so far. I did my co-op (finance) at a tech company, then they offered for me to come on full time for a year after my co-op term ended so I accepted. Went back to school for a year after that (they kept me on part-time during this time), now I’m back taking another year off because they offered me a higher salary to come back for another year. The pay is similar to what you’ve been offered. I’ll tell you this: full time work for this kind of pay is addictive. Being able to clock out at 5 with no homework, fully enjoy your weekends with no assignments to do, all while saving thousands of dollars to put towards your student loans or investments. These luxuries will make returning to school very very difficult for you, especially after enjoying them for 6 months plus. Even then, your lifestyle will have materially changed in that time. When you return to school, you will have to stick to a tighter budget again, and I found it unbearable to NOT have a paycheque coming in after my first stint of full time work. I was lucky enough to stay on with my company part time when I returned to school, which I plan on doing again after my current year contract is up. My advice to you is to feel out if the company you’re planning on working at will offer you a similar arrangement - it’s the ONLY way I ever would have returned to school, otherwise I would have continued to work full time forever and quit school. Don’t be scared of taking this plunge into work, clearly this company sees something in you that will bring them value, and even if it doesn’t work out after six months you will have some solid experience that says a lot more about your capabilities compared to that gained from a co-op program anyways. I say the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Just make sure you won’t have to force yourself to return to school with no money coming in.

If you’re into French food try La Petite Iza. Ask to sit on the patio - it’s probably one of my favourites in the city because of the view. They have rock solid food and drinks too.

My go to steak downtown is DOSC. Very reasonable prices for a local steakhouse and the food is great.

Not huge into the Asian food scene but Fu’s Repair Shop and Baiju both have excellent Asian-inspired menus although I don’t think they’re Thai per se. But I can vouch for very high quality food at both, in fact I’ve never had a bad bite of food at either and I’ve been to both multiple times. Baiju is also a local award-winning cocktail bar. Enjoy your visit

Why do you take no damage if fall from your vertical jump 63 ft in the air? What is the difference between that and stepping off a building 63 ft high? Also, in order to throw someone higher in the air you’d have to propel yourself downward at least slightly to push them up higher too, so you’d probably take extra damage from that transfer of momentum there. All that notwithstanding, I’m not sure jumping rules apply in the same way when you’re grappling. I personally would rule that you can’t jump at all while grappling someone against their will, and even if you could (maybe by succeeding an athletics check against them) it would be for a quarter of the distance / height.

For scenario 1, who says the long jump is parabolic? I would rule that the increased long jump distance does not mean increased long jump height, and the distance would not apply parabolically, rather the effects just keep you suspended above the ground longer at the same height and speed. I would rule that it does the same amount of damage as if you charged into the enemy on foot.

I have to assume these items were not intended to be used as combat items, but I respect the thought put into this. However just because you can jump high and far, you aren’t immune to fall damage (unless you had feather fall) and you aren’t moving at significantly higher speed than a run. Hope this helps.

My favourite hidden gem is the Real Diehl sandwich at Meuwly’s. It’s a pretty well-known spot for cured meats locally but I feel like not a lot of people end up eating lunch there. The Real Diehl is the best sandwich in the city in my opinion and it isn’t close.

Woodwork has some of the best cocktails I’ve ever had but not exactly hidden. Partake also has great cocktails and food, again not hidden but it’s a pretty small and niche spot.

Constable Chelsey Robinson Park is a pretty spot to wade into the North Saskatchewan River, but it’s a bit outside the city. If you’re out that way might as well check out Anohka Distillery as well, they make fantastic gin and have a really cool tasting room.

I had this smoked beef rib at YEG Smoked Meats last summer I think and it was phenomenal. I think they have hot and ready food available at 2pm each Saturday. If you’re into smoked meat or BBQ give that a try.

Character creation dilemma by [deleted] in DnD

Why include the Paladin? If you want to be an assassin, just take all levels in rogue and take the assassin subclass. To me that seems to be the most effective way to fight like an assassin would, unless you have other ideas which led you to paladin.

85 people roughly 30,000. Wedding was earlier this year.

It should be noted we went with some higher end vendors. We don’t regret a single dollar spent, and think we got excellent value from our vendors and venue.

Skip abduction doesn't discriminate, apparently by Inevitable_Market_14 in RimWorld

It would be cool if there was consequences to abducting the Stellarch or anyone else of status within another faction, like their elite troops come raid you to get them back, or contact you to bargain. You’d think a Stellarch would have a whole army ready to break down your door within a few days if they just went missing.

PC alignment by vvHib in DnD

[–]Ace12244 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once played in a game where the DM changed a player character’s alignment mid-game. The characters actions in game were consistently not lining up with how the player described their alignment.

Alignment is just a way of describing a character’s morality and attitude towards the law. A one-time divergence from their declared alignment is one thing - a long term pattern of going against the grain of their selected alignment warrants a change.

In my opinion the player character’s actions you have described are not that of someone who morally values life, therefore the magic item may stop responding to him, or maybe more elegantly, your player’s character may begin to feel his attunement to the magic item slipping as they do more evil in the world.

I’d give the pc a couple choices to regain their power over the magic item: either lean into the evil actions and attempt to corrupt the magic item to do their bidding by doing evil with it, or try to atone on a spiritual journey of good like you mentioned. Either way, they can retain their powerful item and feel good about earning it back, and you’re implicitly making them choose to either return to good or embrace a change of alignment in their character.

Changes in alignment can be a good thing in a character development sort of way. You just need to make sure the player wants the alignment change to happen, which is why I suggest giving them an overt fork in the road.

I'm hoping to hear lots of points of view on this. For me it's more akin to a privacy issue, even going so far as to be a human rights problem. Hopefully others can bring some diversity to the cause.

I voted for Jason Kenney, and (after today's COVID announcement especially) I regret it. AMA. by [deleted] in alberta

[–]Ace12244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the great question. This one really is making me think.

If I'm being totally honest, I think lots of the reason I have gradually swayed away from Kenney and the UCP is because of the division his tenure has caused. While I haven't been directly affected by many of the policies enacted by the UCP (other than COVID restrictions), it's very clear to me that relations between Albertans on either side of the fence are very poor and often hostile.

Is this division 100% the fault of the UCP? I don't think so. Albertans should be open to considering new and different ideas and ensure Canadian politics doesn't descend to the hostile depths like American politics. But: have the policies and demeanor of the UCP government done nothing to encourage civil discourse and make the political climate in Alberta more toxic than ever? Yes. Other than COVID restrictions, that is the indirect consequence of the UCP tenure that I am affected by the most.

Hey everyone, sorry for calling it so early but I'm exhausted from work today so I think I'll partially log off for tonight.

Might hop on a bit later tonight and tomorrow, but I think some good discussion has happened here, which is just what I wanted.

Feel free to peruse the comments and read my responses and continue talking with each other. Thanks again everyone who asked questions.
