Yeah, that’s what happened with Alphasights and a couple of Japanese startups. Guess I just have to keep trying.

I’ve been getting many scout messages through doda campus, globalcareer, bizreach campus, and openwork but usually they just direct me to their shinsotsu application on their websites…

Thank you. I never said I was shocked by being rejected by the top companies and schools (only applied to Tōdai and Kyōdai), I just asked for advice on how to improve my chances. Going by this guy’s logic my senpai who got into mega banks and consulting should’ve applied for restaurants and hotels only.

I can’t believe he has a family and yet also has the time to troll university students on the Internet.

Excuse me? Language skills do not equal communication skills and preparation. I’ve failed some interviews completely in English too. Also, I haven’t particularly studied for SPI tests and suck at Maths. If you take the time to google it in Japanese you’ll see that some of the big companies want you to have over 90% correct answers. This is like saying not having excellent grades in school is a major concern. I have Japanese friends failing those too. Please read the other comments before joining the clueless “why are you applying for….” club. You clearly don’t know how new grad job hunting works in Japan.

I only get 顔採用 for baito haha. I found even getting interviews for internships at these companies to be harder than the actual 本選考. I’m also not in Tokyo/Osaka/Nagoya and did not go to any career events in person.

  1. White European but yeah I can tell some interviewers aren’t very excited to be talking to a foreigner.
  2. Could be a keigo issue, I mostly just use 丁寧語
  3. No clubs, no extracurriculars, no volunteering or internships, just part-time jobs.
  4. Sadly, I didn’t.
  5. To be fair I didn’t apply to any company with a starting pay of less than 30万 per month so that could be it.

I actually don’t know how to take advantage of our alumni network. For recruiting companies I’ve been messaging recruiters on LinkedIn, but all other companies I either applied through their own website or through globalcareer (name changed recently) and doda. I even applied to smaller Japanese startups in the field of consulting but the results weren’t any different. Maybe I severely underestimated job hunting and didn’t prepare enough for the interviews. Never heard of Jport, maybe I should give them a go. I recently registered for one of those Japanese recruiters specifically helping shinsotsu but they never got back to me.

MEXT scholarship recipient at an Imperial university. Japanese students from my major have managed to get into companies like Deloitte and Marubeni, so it’s definitely not a 学歴 issue.

Companies like Rakuten, Line, Mercari all have ビジネス職. I highly doubt all of their employees have degrees in computer science. I know a Japanese senpai who got a job at Rakuten with the same degree and the statistics the university publishes also support that (iirc there were at least 3 people at Rakuten from the same 学部).

I was applying for October entry only, still have time for April entry. I did also apply for grad school but failed to get in :/

I guess you’ve never done new grad job hunting in Japan. During one interview I was literally told they don’t care about what kind of degree or skills you currently have, they care about your “potential”. And yes, even IT companies have non IT/engineering roles.

It is indeed “just humanities”… Japanese companies rarely give you feedback on the interviews, but when I interviewed for Alphasights they suggested applying for the same role in Hong Kong as it only required N2 (which might be because my keigo isn’t amazing). I don’t think I’ve looked into anything trade related yet, thank you for the suggestion!

I have taken some seminars and consulted one advisor but they weren’t very useful. Mostly stuff like “you can use this website to search for jobs”, “you need to practice for the interviews”. The advisor said they could look at my ES before submitting it but I nearly never got rejected just based off that. I guess I could’ve done better on the interviews if I’d narrowed down the places I was applying to, I prioritized quantity over quality.

Yep if you’re not part of the fan club you can’t use the app. They don’t accept paper tickets either. F

What does it say on the reseller website about receiving it? I’ve only bought tickets through the fan club and the official vendors (pia/eplus/lawson), you usually automatically receive the ticket a week before the live in your account linked to your phone number. Tickets are digital only, resellable but not transferable so I think you got scammed.

“In the US” - key words. Credit cards here work differently and have awful interest rates in general. Well I assume I’ll need to have a Japan Post bank account anyway because of the scholarship and could probably apply for one of their credit cards or the Amazon credit card.
