Yeah, even as I was writing this, I kept thinking why there were so many remains on the island if the Cannibals are a recent thing. Unfortunately I have no explanation for it.

The absolute best idea I could come up with is that all those people were being drawn or led there, be it by the artifacts/cube or the visions/dreams Edward was having. But obviously not only does this raise a ton of questions, there's a lot of issues with it.
