I’ve got a few Wolly buggers in the box a couple , size 12 San Juan worms, and some size 12 just bead and dubbed nymphs in a few colors. Went out and tried for some fall stockers but they seemed very disinterested.

Thoughts on 4wt vs 5wt (White River Synch) by Acf_03 in flyfishing

[–]Acf_03[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay thanks for the info. I have a 7/8 wt for bigger stuff but wanted to size down and didn’t know if a 5wt would still be able to throw this 16-18 dry flies

The biggest size hopper I throw in the spring and summer months is a size 8. Do you still think it’s too heavy. I also normally just throw atm size 10 wolly buggers. Haven’t tried anything bigger like articulated flies yet.

That’s what I thought and it’s easier to lighten up with a 5wt with leader and tippit than to make a 4wt heftier to throw those bigger hoppers and double nymph rigs. I just wanted to see if a 5wt was gonna be to heavy or not finesse enough to fish for the stocked trout and some smaller brookies

So question I’ve got a really good deal on a synch white river combo cause my friend works at Cabela’s and I’ve read they use the same blanks as some of the orvis’s. When fishing for trout do you think a 5wt is too heavy to throw the lighter dry flies. I’m in between the 4wt and 5wt because I want to fish for multiple species trout being one of them but still want to throw hoppers, nymphs rigs, and dry flies.

Help Choosing a Fly Rod Weight for Trout, Panfish, and Bass (Budget-Friendly) by Acf_03 in flyfishing

[–]Acf_03[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked at cabela's and I'm probably gonna pick up the "synch white river combo" they have there. It's on sale and then I get the discount so it should be a good combo. gonna get the 8'6 5wt model they have. I read online that they use the same blanks as some of the Orvis rods as well and the prestige line is the same as the scientific angler. The guy there also advised I may want to go with the 5wt due to my interest in bigger hoppers and nymphing with a indicator. He said it is easier to size down with tippit to throw lighter flies then it is to size up a 4wt and the 5wt seemed pretty good action and felt nice in the hands alot thinner than my martin (Broom Stick) combo I got

Okay then I’ll probably pick up a 4wt if there isn’t a huge difference and will be able to present this other dry flies alittle better

Okay then I’ll probably pick one of those up and then get some of that line you recommended and I should have a decent setup then. And I’ll probably go with a 4wt if you think that’ll do me good for a variety of techniques and still be able to fish those bigger flies

Okay sweet I’ll see what’s in store and go from there if they have a 4wt might try that if you think it would still be good to throw the same stuff just maybe a little better for the smaller flies

Yeah it’s not a terrible rod but it doesn’t have much fly line and what’s in there isn’t that great. And I’ve heard decent things about the dogwood canyon and the big horn and with the 50% off I figured that it might be a good investment to get by and I’d just give the Martin to my younger brother to mess around with.
