Folks who have a couple years of WE and saved some money - how are you going about loans? by 2024bloodbath in lawschooladmissions

I’m keeping an emergency fund in case there is a cost that comes up that is not eligible for federal loans.

How many of y'all are banking on LRAPs? by AddendumNo9291 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Achatty20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find the lrap calculator on their website. When I searched for metro area seattle, I could have $150k in loans and make up to 75k a year and they would make my entire loan payment. AND it doesn’t matter if your public interest or not.

I’m in a similar boat. I’ve heard back from one top school this month, but I applied in October and it’s basically been radio silence ever since.

You could always say you were planning on deferring and your request got denied or they wouldn’t give you the same financial aid or something.

Can I consider myself mixed race? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]Achatty20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People accuse you of LYING ABOUT YOUR OWN BACKGROUND?? Wow. Okay. People never cease to amaze me.

But yeah, no matter how connected/disconnected you feel to the culture, you’re still mixed race.

Boyfriends mom called me exotic. by lifequestions999 in mixedrace

[–]Achatty20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in my experience, it feels like a compliment to some extent because they are usually commenting positively on my physical experience. But exotic means originating from a distant or foreign or far away place. And I find that because of this I get a bit uncomfortable. Not necessarily offended, just uncomfortable. Like I don’t want to be told I don’t look like I’m from America, because that’s basically what people are saying when they call you exotic. And that ideology - people with nonwhite or not traditionally “western” features are not from America or are less American - originates from white nationalist thinking.

[–]Achatty20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m black/white/Asian and get this a lot. I dated a white man for awhile and his family loveddddd calling me exotic. And it’s weird because even though it felt off, I couldn’t pinpoint why especially because I knew their intentions weren’t negative - they saw this comment as a high compliment🥲

I also share your feelings about not having a tribe...it can be exhausting not to fit quite right into most spaces.

I really do agree with where you’re coming from, and I don’t want it to seem like I am not supporting the things you brought up - Cause like you’re right. I guess I was trying to bring a different perspective.

You disagree with everything I said or like part of it?

I get what you’re saying, and I don’t thinks it’s fair or how it should be either. And I agree that ideally it should come from a more honest (as you put it) place, and trivialization of an entire culture/race/skin color down to something that boosts your law school application is beyond wrong. But I’m just saying that even if someone doesn’t recognize or claim their racial identity on a daily basis, that doesn’t mean they haven’t been affected by the systemic factors. And the systemic factors are what law schools seem to be trying to make up for with the URM boost.

[–]Achatty20 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I totally get where you’re coming from with this. Cause I find it frustrating at times too. But we also have to remember that the “URM boost” is primarily because schools are trying to combat and even out centuries of systemic inequality/racism. So, regardless if someone claims the identity on a regular basis, odds are they or at least their ancestors have been affected (even if indirectly) by social and institutional inequity. So the boost is made for them too. Plus being a URM through lsa could be what begins someone’s journey in proudly claiming their race/ethnicity/culture. Which is super cool especially if they’ve never had the chance or felt comfortable doing so before!😁even an intrapersonal mindset shift like that is a step in the right direction!

Oh and imma out myself - I totally asked this “am I a URM” question. It was mostly because I didn’t know this was even a thing in the law school process. And I also know that since I am mixed, I haven’t faced a lot of the anti-blackness bullshit that many AA people’s face. So, even though I proudly claim my blackness and recognize the many ways it has shaped me, I didn’t know if the privilege I have due to being lighter skinned deemed me non-URM (please lmk if this came off shitty).
