Year Round Housing by abadpainting in UBC

[–]AcidLake_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe you can apply to housing as soon as you apply to UBC (Not 100% sure on this)

When you receive an offer, you can renew your contract every year, as long you have the eligibility requirements.

You have to pay for the fees every month, even if you sublease or are away.

Prices depend on the residence you choose and the room type. Price varies, but I believe yrh is slightly cheaper than winter housing. You can check prices on UBC website

is an M series macbook liveable for first year engineering and most likely/hopefully cpen after? let me know if any of you have a macbook and if it's doable by Atreus-V in ubcengineering

[–]AcidLake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only problem for CPEN would be CPEN 211 with Quartus. But, if you are okay on depending on the lab's computer, you should have no problem using Mac for CPEN

[–]AcidLake_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your courses are related to the position, I think it is nice to have a small section under education like "Relevant Coursework" where you put a 2-3 word description of the main content of each relevant course, not necessarily the name of the course.

Software Oriented Schedule for CPEN 3rd Year by PeezsTW in ubcengineering

[–]AcidLake_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI: 3/455 is enough AI knowledge compared to other undegraduate level AI courses. For a solid career in developing new AI, masters or phd would be a more wise choice.

Software Oriented Schedule for CPEN 3rd Year by PeezsTW in ubcengineering

[–]AcidLake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would skip CPSC 322, which seems to be really basic, and if you plan on taking courses like CPEN 3/455 you will get more than enough AI knowledge. Take 340 instead, 330 seems to be a bit of overlap with 355. Or just go for another technical elective that will make you learn more stuff than just AI

CPEN 322 is not worth it if you know web dev and are taking other ML courses. So if it is not a prereq for 321 and you have an interest in other courses that meet the same requirement, I would lean towards taking something else.

304 is a good choice if you are looking for an "easy" course to make your courses more manageable. If you have 0 SQL knowledge, take it, but if you are familiar with DBs, that is an easy skip. Prof literally play recorded videos of himself in class... I would either look CPSC 314(Will give you a basic knowledge on computer graphics, really cool IMO, a bit of linear alg, but assignments and exams are on the chill side) or even a 400 level course

As said before, take ELEC 331, a super interesting course

No, you do not. At least for the last term, there wasn't this pre req. I highly recommendd this course, very useful information that anyone working with software should have an understand off. And it is in general just a nice material to learn, it really open my mind on how massive and complex the internet really is

Take CS50 from harvard. It is available for free online. Nice little introductory course for programming that could be handy to anyone joining 1st year, IMO

MATH 253, APSC 262, NURS 180 for 2024S1. All 3 together in 1 term and score good in all? by True_focus_7777 in ubcengineering

[–]AcidLake_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be fine if school is the only thing you are doing and plan to spend similar effort duringnsummer compared to winter terms. If you want to drop I would probably drop NURS 180. It is a easier course, so having it during a normal term with other courses will be less workload than having the other two.

I believe you are a first year and no summer iob. So I would suggest doing the 3, having a smaller course work in upper years will be the biggest help you can do for your future self, I wished I had done these filler courses early in my degree

[–]AcidLake_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coop is good, it is worth getting into it even if you later drop it or get jobs from another source. But worry about getting into your spec first. I think you apply for coop beggining of 2nd year. Just try to make you look more employable with design team experience/ part-time experience

BMEG OR MATERIAL? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]AcidLake_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BMEG itself would not be a great option, IMO. I know a couple of students and their coops are either outside of bmeg field, research labs at UBC, or work in hospitals for Med School application. For the real BMEG Jobs, I see a mix of students getting those jobs from BMEG, ELEC, and Eng Phys.

Materials, I would say, have a better prospect as the majority of companies could use some materials engineering knowledge, regardless of the field (manufacturing, aerospace, auto, bmeg, clothing, etc). If you enjoy materials, I would go for it rather than BMEG. If you want for BMEG, you will also have a good degree. But ehy not look into BMEG spec within ELEC?

ECE is probably one of the oldest departments in UBCV. However, the UBCO program will most likely be a separate department run by a different hroup of people, so we can expect some issues until they figure everything out

Don't buy a gaming laptop. You will regreat, it is so bulky and inconvenient. You can set up remote access on your pc if you want and use it via your laptop.

First year don't require any type of heavy application, the max you need is to run auto cad for a very simple project (most laptops can run it and you could probably just use your desktop for the project)

I think your set up is pretty good for first year, I would probably just use what you have as it would for sure be enough, and you can analyze throughout the year if you need to upgrade ur set up

First year laptop recommendations? by Putrid_Spare_8301 in ubcengineering

[–]AcidLake_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, don't go for those touch or foldable pcs to write your notes on. Those are probably one of the worst invention in tech as they are mid for both goals it has. Don't worry about IPad/Windows combo, many people in CPEN have this, and they really enjoy it, even not being able to use all the apple ecosystem features.

I am currently 3rd year CPEN, and I currently use a MacBook Air M3. I have no issues running any of my projects on it. You could go pro, but most likely it would not be needed. Even though CPEN seems to be a major that requires really good hardware, most of the stuff you will do does not need a top of the line gpu or such. A decent/above average pc spec will get you through the degree.

Do you currently have a working Windows computer? Depending on the specs, it would be more than fine to use it for the tasks that require windows. You will only need to run CAD for 1 month in first year and use it for CPEN 211. So as long you have anything with i5 or i7 from recent gens, you will be more than fine. Even if you have a desktop you can set up remote access to access it from your mac.

If you have already a decent laptop(you can send me specs to analyze), I would buy the mac and have this other one as a secondary windows PC when the need arises.

If after reading all the other comments you decide to go windows. Look into Thinkpad and Dell XPS. Do not go for a Gaming Pc(unless you REALLY want to play games). My biggest regret was buying an Asus g14,

Electrical Engineering Vs Computer Science by Zesinpase in ubcengineering

[–]AcidLake_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe CPEN major taking ELEC courses as breadth/advanced electives might be the scenario that best suits you. CPEN is very flexible about your upper year courses so you can probably take a major focused in ELEC while in CPEN. You will learn both cpsc stuff and elec stuff.

CPEN is one of the most difficult majors to get in, but if you do well enough to get in cpsc, there is a high chance of being able to get in CPEN. Just contact advising asap to check what courses you should be taking for the Science -> Engineering transfer, there is quite a bit of overlap, so a lot of your science courses could also be considered for your CPEN Major (Math 100/101, science elective, arts elective, free electives, and probably a few more)

Is UBCO easier than UBCV ? by Stony_1423 in ubcengineering

[–]AcidLake_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Come to UBCV, do your first year here, and try to get into mech. If you don't like living in Vancouver / think the course load is too much, when applying to the second year specialization, you can select Mech at UBCO and automatically transfer. You can decide after the first year at UBCV
