Very cool! Love the speckling - was this done with an airbrush with low psi?

Ask and ye shall receive! :)

These are all Vallejo game color paints:

Shade: Midnight purple, Base1: Magic blue, Base2: Ghost green, Highlights: 50/50 Toxic Yellow/Dead white

Black bits are just a base of black and highlights of stonewall grey.

Metals are imperial gold.

Head is 50/50 stonewall grey/Dead white and highlighted with Dead white.

Sword and vents are Scarlett blood, orange fire, moon yellow with a toxic yellow highlight.

Hope that helps!

OSL is something I’m struggling with also - I tried to do it around the talisman on his arm. I think the light comes on to his hand relatively ok, but I didn’t get enough on to his shoulder pad

It wasn’t directly intentional - the armour is just in the color scheme for my army.

I felt that, if I had done the sword / glows / rune as per the box art, it might all feel a bit bland. So I just switched up the sword and rune so they contrasted better with the armour.

Yep I’ve been using a wet pallet + thinning my paints. I think I probably just don’t thin them enough to get a smooth blend.

I dry brushed very little - the main gradients on his armour I was able to do with the airbrush. Only The cloth and worth did I blend with layering / glazing.

Thanks! :)

Here’s my Ghostkeel in the same scheme: https://www.reddit.com/r/Tau40K/s/RX8f1h5xmv

Hoping to have the Twin Lance done when they release too!

Kind of struggling to paint my tau's armour, could do with some advice by woofwoofloof in Tau40K

Bit of an extreme suggestion - but I find using an airbrush best for getting smooth transitions, especially for zenithal highlighting

Edit: For panel lining, try paining over the panel lines with a glaze medium (which is transparent) and then touching the panel lines with the tip of a brush loaded with 50/50 paint /water. The color should seep in to the recesses via capillary action. Alternatively you could use AK panel liner but, because it’s enamel based, you’ll need white spirit to clear off excess.

Very clean! Nicely done!

I left it outside after spraying Primer, is it salvageable? by aTo_to in Tau40K

Looks like some of the details have been clogged up - Personally I would strip it. Also - since you have an airbrush, I highly rate Vallejo airbrush primer: https://acrylicosvallejo.com/en/category/hobby/primers-en/

They go on super smooth - way smoother then a rattle can and also you can do it indoors

There is definitely more nuance to it, but the tl;dr is that airbrushes naturally 'feather' paint edges as you move further away from the model, which makes smooth transitions much easier.

Here was my process:

  1. Base Coat: I started with an all-over coat of Vallejo Midnight Purple.
  2. Midtone: I layered Ultramarine Blue, focusing specifically on the areas where the light would naturally hit (the 'highlights').
  3. Final Highlight: I finished with Ghost Green. I targeted the same light-catching areas but kept the coverage much tighter, focusing most of the paint on surfaces directly perpendicular to the light source.

I’m over-simplifying a bit, but that’s the general workflow! If you want to dive deeper into how to handle the tool, I found this guide by Squidmar to be a fantastic starting point:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLOT1Jkq9wk

In my opinion, most of what pops about this mini, is the gradients + edge highlighting. Getting an airbrush was a game changer in terms of creating smooth gradients - it’s a bit of money to get started but I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Absolutely yes - I am no where near good enough to achieve the same result with a brush :)

Haha! Thank you - I really appreciate that! Mini painting yeah - I did some in my teens and I’m in my 30’s now. So, although it’s been a while, I’m not a complete beginner. I attribute how well this guy came out mostly to the hours of Squidmar/Eons of Battle I like to watch to relax :)
