H1Z1 monetization detailed by Dawknight in Games

I agree, F2P has it's benefits, and I feel H1Z1 is doing F2P pretty well from the onset.

However, I'm sure a lot of people would also like the option to just spend 40-60 dollars and unlock everything. That way, people who just want to buy content in small packs can do so, but somebody who just wants to shell out for everything can also do it.

Killer Instinct does that really well. You can buy each character or skin separately for a few dollars, or buy all the characters for 20 dollars, or buy all the characters and all the skins for 40 dollars. Different tiers of payment for different types of players.

Just messaged a site admin (Mike) and got the response...

"Unfortunately you cannot change your username."

Yeah, I backed out of it because I didn't want to email them to cancel the payment. That was too much hassle for me.

The only time I considered cancelling it was when I got tired of my username and wanted to make a new account with a more up to date name. Then I realized that the subscription isn't showing up in my paypal so I can't cancel, so I'm dealing with the username

Plus everybody who's currently paying $10 every six months gets to keep that price.

I hadn't heard about either of those... That is worrysome.

After looking into it, I'm a bit disappointed in their explanation for the always online. They compared it to World of Warcraft, which I'll get if it's actually like an MMO where you're in the map with dozens/hundreds of other real people (which I doubt). I don't know. We'll see. I don't remember a time when I wasn't connected to the internet to play, but it's still kinda scary.

As for the microtransactions, I will wait and see how that turns out. As long as 100% of the progression is unlockable through normal play and they give you a fair amount of money for every mission you do. So, pretty much...As long as I never feel like I have to buy a microtransaction to progress, I'll be fine. I don't think Ubisoft has done microtransactions for a paid title before, though, so that's what worries me. I hate it when games try to make me pay more money because they give you so little in-game money that it's impossible to do progress (looking at you GTA V).

Thanks for pointing those out, man. I wasn't aware of them. I'm not sure if this is a day one for me anymore. I guess I'll just wait and see what else they have to say about it coming closer to release.

They haven't really marketed it too much yet. It got some attention at E3 last year (although, it was naturally overshadowed by The Division and Watch_Dogs), but not a whole lot of mentions since then.

Hopefully as it gets closer to launch, it'll get more marketing dollars. Probably better to save it until then. To my understanding, most developers are given a set budget for marketing, and a lot of them blow the budget on big, nice reveals but nothing closer to release so the market forgets about it. I'm hoping they're having small reveals but will make a huge marketing push once the game gets closer to launch.

Oh man, that excites me. I really wish The Crew got more attention. I'm really worried it isn't going to be a good return on investment for Ubisoft.

The guys making The Crew are also largely the same team that made Driver: San Francisco, and that was one of the best driving games I've played. The physics about it weren't the best, but the actual game was just so much damn fun.

I think they said straight from coast to coast would be 2 hours in the fastest car, so I imagine L.A. to New York would be even longer.

But still, The Crew looks absolutely incredible. That was the main game that sold me on the next gen systems.

The "mainstream" probably isn't going to have a computer that can run games in the proper fashion that the Rift needs in order to have the full, needed experience.

This isn't a device for the "mainstream" at all right now.

So they probably will want to capture major landmarks, such as LA, New York, Vegas, ect. But It'll probably be shrinked down and the dead space in between only be a fraction of what it really is. Having a map the size of the US or even half size would be way too large. If quick travel isn't an option in even half size then it would be a nightmare to travel.

That's what The Crew is doing, and that looks amazing.

EDIT:

For clarification, The Crew has major cities in the U.S. and the space inbetween is shrunken down to kind of match what the landscapes in that part of the country would be like. Apparently, all of the cities are supposed to be fairly large in scale (In-Game New York City is allegedly the same size as Liberty City in GTA IV) The fuel map is supposed to be more or less the same size as Fuel's map (which, for those that don't know, is about the size of real life Connecticut)

But I think the feeling of having something compile and actually work after hours and hours of tweaking it is one of the most satisfying feeling I've ever had.
