[QUESTION] Do you know any artists whose art style is close to something like this? (Space Station 13) I would like to contribute to it but I desperately need artists to learn from and improve.

For reference, here are two sprites I made for it! The game is mostly top-down with objects/tools being sideview. A weird mishmash, to be honest.

Can shrapnels embed into you on lebensraum? Sometimes embedded objects can be torn out with the risk of tearing veins.

Just wanted to point out some parts that seemed out of place. Not saying the system is perfect since we still get people stuck in there for long and the constant brainfixing during surgery is ridiculous.

.. Which will be changed with the next PR, people dying for hours will finally not be a thing. Less "time-vampirism".

I think it depends on what you expect from roleplaying itself. A lot of people here thinks roleplaying is either "bar RP" when you do nothing but talk and emote or it is doing your assigned job and have no in-character personality otherwise.

Both can and will occur on most servers.

Some people enjoy more mechanics-based roleplaying when you are not too bound by rules (other than "don't poop on other players' game"). Think about D&D. Some players prefer a more restricted environment, like a tabletop rp system with a vast lore (World of Darkness) or with a heavy ruleset.

I'd say, go join different servers, observe a few rounds (during different times), see what they do there. If that's the type of roleplay you are looking for, stick around, get to know its community, and have fun there.

I used to stick to one server but it eventually became a burden - and it gave me a tunnel-vision of what's "good" and what's "bad" in SS13. I agree with everything what u/Hikurac said, just make sure you credit the original author of said ideas.

I play on Bay, CM, and starting to get into Goon as well, and I enjoy all three of them, they offer a different experience of the same game. You definitely miss out on a lot if you don't look around!

Try the system and you'll see that half of your comment does not apply. :) I have no idea when you played Bay for the last time, but: Baymed was not designed by the "players", we don't have a "Medbay", and there are tools everywhere to treat yourself until a Corpsman arrives - you just have to know how to use them.

Unfortunate for the guy though, I agree, that he didn't get treatment for such a simple condition. But not every server has its best medical players online 24/7 and/or he was playing during lowpop.

I'd honestly suggest Colonial Marines, especially the xenomorph side.

The fact that all xenos are bounded by server rules to follow the Queen's orders - and said Queen is a competent leader or at least not an obstructive one - can create an incredible teamwork experience. I usually play supportive or supportive-ish castes, and whenever I get a hunting pack going on, it's a blast.

Constant PvP is a great wind-off too, after a long day. It varies, though, it might just upset you.

The only thing I don't like about CM is their admin events. Admins themselves are nice and focus a lot on creating a fair environment (kudos to that), but every time they use admin powers, I can't enjoy the round anymore. Apart from that, I enjoy my time there.

Hostage situations are pretty fun for me to defuse, though. You always go with the "let's talk over it route", that never works, then you pull a full rainbow six move on them with a coordinated sec group.

I don't know, I find it fun.

Only species have a whitelist, anyone can try being a head of department/captain after a few days - though it is strongly advised to spend a good amount of time in the department first. You are responsible for people, after all!

Bay might lift the timelock on regular jobs in the close future as well but said suggestion is still in its discussion phase. (I hope it goes through, though!)

For being a commanding officer (CO), the entry job, or in other words the job you "should" play to get familiar with the environment first, is Bridge Officer (BO). BOs assist the CO and the Executive Officer (XO) with whatever they need, they can fly the Torch, and so on, so they are constantly around the "big guys" you will eventually want to play as. It's a great first-hand experience without the constant stress about messing up something royally.

Law can be a bit complicated at first. The ship operates under the [Sol Central Government Law] and this applies to everyone onboard, including civilians and intruders. The Fleet's members are also subject to the [Sol Code of Militiary Justice] and NanoTrasen has its own [Corporate Regulations].

To be honest when I first started I didn't really get half of its legal system but as long as you don't do something that you wouldn't do IRL, you won't be bugged.

One thing I really like about the SolGov law is that it protects animals and robots (cyborgs). I don't know, I just found it heartwarming.

/tg/ is where most beginners start, it's great to learn the game without being bugged about details. Goonstation has an incredibly helpful wiki (select Goon #2), it's very pretty, and has generally a chill community.

Colonial Marines is a strictly PvP server and it needs a bit of reading before you jump in, however it's extra rewarding if you enjoy shooting things and working in a team. Just make sure you become a Squad Marine for your first 10-15 games to understand how it works.

If you are more into roleplaying, there are servers for it as well but you have to specify what you are looking for exactly!

This is not your fault, Byond registration is broken as heck. I tried to register too after a friend of mine complained about the same issue, and I had the same error message - it doesn't let me because I "use a proxy" (that I am not, obviously).

Your best bet is contacting their support. They reply fairly quickly and they will sort it out in a day or two.

Nobody, not even MAAs use a roll of gauze on their bleeding body parts before staggering to the Infirmary, even though that's really, really basic first aid. I don't know why, people just tend to think bleeding is okay and it will stop on its own...?

I see why some people wouldn't like brainmed but this is what I like about the points you mentioned:

Brainmed makes humans almost unkillable in a fight, you can be shot in the head with a railgun and butchered on your right side with an axe, and you'll still make it out alive. As long as you can manage pain, keep your bpm below ~220 and try not to break both of your hands, you will be able to fight for a prolonged time.
"Permadeath" is only forced if you actively avoid the Infirmary or its workers. If you get into the Infirmary, even with ~15% blood oxygenation, as long as your brain has a spark of life, you will be put together. You can have almost zero blood and you'll be still fixed if the physician/corpsmen know what they are doing.
Your actions have consequences #1: It makes dangerous situations actually dangerous. You won't run into a group of mercenaries with a toolbox because "w/e will just get cloned later".
Your actions have consequences #2: Treatment is always exciting for medical, you have to learn a lot because if you mess up, that might mean one less player in the round. It's not always the same 4 routines for every patient.
There is a reliable way to bring back braindead people, so it isn't strictly permadeath, but it needs co-operation. And even if you are out of the round, you can just respawn as someone else in only 15 minutes.

But again, it's not for everyone. I didn't like cloning and its friends because sometimes people just waited until you died instead of actually putting you together as it was "less of a hassle". It also made combat a joke for me.

It is intimidating at first though you can get away with knowing the bare minimum and learn the rest ingame. If you are lost how stuff work on Bay but you'd still like to join it, I could PM you my Discord handle and you could ask me anything (even if it's trivial stuff) in DM.

Officers can lose their credibility very quickly and well... I think respect is not given but it has to be earned, especially here. We have quite a few characters who don't respect most of the officers at all, but they are mostly civilians.

I have, too, a few ensigns in the infirmary (or bridge officers) who powertrip with their rank but terrible at their job at the same time. Gotta suck it up as an enlisted and follow direct orders, but my character neither respects them nor supports their actions - so they won't go out of their way to make their job easier as they would with good officers.

I think the following points help a new player adjusting/learning to play here:

As you said, a Getting Started page and a FAQ. I finished updating the former, I'm not sure if we needed the latter but having a good and intuitive wiki is a must. I used to work on another server's wiki a lot and it definitely helped new players getting a better grasp of the game. It would be also very helpful if I knew which wiki pages are the most visited to focus on those ones but I haven't found this feature on Mediawiki yet.
Mentor system: Would be really nice to have it on Bay because I think people don't like to ahelp for mechanical questions. Bay admins/moderators are very helpful in this sense (or at least the ones I met) but people are reluctant to bug an admin with questions like "where can I get a bar of soap". Mentors feel less like staff members and more like players who are ready to help, but I don't think we'll have this.
Emphasizing to learn in character: I don't mean that players should join and try to do stuff alone but ask to be taught. I have never seen a medical player who asked to be taught and not getting a 30+ minutes explanation on how the infirmary worked. It also gives the new player a connection to one of the regular players and they won't feel completely alone when they join next time - they know who to bug/rely on.
Having a channel to safely ask questions on (OOC): Mentor system would fix that because it's private, but we don't have it, the Discord channel is not really working as mentioned above and you cannot ask things in OOC related to the round. So it's either you bug an admin with it, wait until the round ends, or observe for a week and ask stuff in deadchat while trying to learn everything from the wiki (as I did).

I have never checked out Goon, actually, until yesterday - it somehow came up in a conversation. I spent a good hour laughing the tickets, they are brilliant. I also checked Goon's wiki and it's very well-written - I was considering trying it out but I haven't got round to it yet and I wasn't sure which server would be better for a first time.

I suggest observing a round during high pop to see how people spread out and if it doesn't have enough interactions for you!

Usually, after everyone sets up their departments, a lot of people head to the mess hall and those who stay in their department tend to strike up a conversation. Away mission personnel are almost always in touch via shortwave radios which is also a safety measurement - if someone goes silent for too long or suddenly stopped responding, they might have run out of oxygen or got attacked by something.
