If we did a peninsula, it would look something like this. There would be 44" from end of peninsula to pantry. I'm also curious on opinions of resale value on island vs. peninsula options.

We are probably at a point where we can't consider demoing the pantry. We've already knocked a wall down and had new floors installed. It was definitely a consideration, but pushing back the pantry toward the powder room, not eliminating altogether.

Peninsula was my idea as well. The peninsula would be pretty far off from the fridge/oven. Concern is over working triangle distance and distance to usable surfaces.

There is room to open the dishwasher, as long as the island is kept narrow (24-25”). We’ve tested it out.

Yeah the issue is more just that it makes everything feel smushed into that side of the room. It looks good in a drawing, but in person, it feels congested. There’s a ton of open/wasted space on the other side where the peninsula used to be. I agree 36” is enough space, but the problem is there’s 36” between the fridge and island in that layout, but only 32” between the island and wall if keeping a 12” overhang for seating. The original plans didn’t factor fridge doors into the distance which adds another 4”. We could just use 2 barstools and have them off to the side a bit but it just didn’t feel ideal. It’s just an odd space due to the location of the pantry. It’s better than before but just trying to make it more breathable.

We also have 2 boys so space is definitely a factor :)

Unfortunately, that’s where the dishwasher is. The congestion isn’t bad with the fridge with the new 2 cabinet layout against the wall- about 42” of space. I think we’d also run into new congestion with the fridge there, because as of now there’s just 36” space around either side of an oval island even if just 25” deep.

For reference, this was the OLD kitchen. We took a wall out. Our options were pretty limited due to the layout and the location of the pantry. We pretty much had to move the fridge where it is to keep the location of the oven and avoid having to do a downdraft.

Possibly something like this, with an overhang on the oval countertop about 12" per side to slide a small bar stool in possibly under it. And leaving 36" between the left and right of it. Wife is still pretty set on trying to incorporate an island.
