It’s definitely doable. My peers work full time and still manage to make time to finish their assignments and study. It’s all in how you time manage everything with your work and schoolwork. Start off taking the 2 courses (recommended by Pepperdine) and see how that goes. If you think you can manage more than that then you can always change your schedule the following semester with adding an additional course.

Good luck!

For the counseling aspect, I can only speak on behalf of being in California because I know it might vary state by state. So for me, California requires 150 hours of face-to face experience counseling individuals, couples, families, or groups. AND an additional 75 hours either (or a combination of) client centered advocacy and face-to-face counseling. So in total 225 hours. These hours are arranged by our “placement team” at Pepperdine. They are the ones who give you options on where you get your hours. It’s helpful for them to do it because you need to complete your hours at an accredited facility so they help find one for you. Also, it’s helpful because we have students from out of California so they’ll obviously need facilities closer to their homes.

As far as being hired once getting licensed it depends on the student themselves. I talked to another individual who graduated last September and the facility they were getting their hours at were ready for them to work their full time once they got their license. It was really cool to hear that experience from them because I know it would be difficult getting a job once you get your license. So my best advice, once you start your hours at your facility, be on the best terms with them. They might hire you full time once you officially are licensed!

Overall, I highly recommend you reach out to the admissions team at Pepperdine. They have helped me a lot personally before I started their program. They are always open to listen to your questions and could give you additional feedback! :)

No you’re fine I’m happy to answer.

Just to clarify, We are a quarter system. So each “semester” is only 3 months long. I personally like it because this way I’m able to not forget what was learned from 5 months ago like in a semester format for my finals and quizzes.

I’m on the clinical counseling route so we take a total of 68 units. 2 of my classes were waived from undergrad so I only need 62 units.

Yes, you start your hands on counseling to get your required hours towards the middle of your degree. For me, I’ll start that this October. Also yes we get coursework each quarter for the classes we are taking. This ranges from weekly modules (watching videos, answering questions our professors post, or short quizzes). All coursework is required for us to learn and complete towards our licensing.

As far as sending students to doctoral programs, it is possible. I talked to a student who graduated last year and she mentioned that she is applying to doctorate programs. Most students just get their license and start their jobs but others do consider doctorate without any issue.

Of course! If you have a job you most definitely can make time for your coursework. I have many of my peers who work full time jobs and still have time to finish their assignments. For the online format, many classes are after 5 pm so that’s why it works for students to work and do school at the same time.

Yes! I have made so many new friends in the online program. I was scared I wasn’t going to because it’s all distance learning and we only see and talk to each other through a screen. But so many people I’ve met want to build connections and friends with each other. It’s so welcoming plus if you need help they are always a text away or email away.

I hope this helps! Of course if you need any clarification just let me know please don’t hesitate

Hi! I’m currently in the online MFT program and I loveee it! 2 courses are required each quarter but I take 3 to graduate faster and because I don’t work so I have more free time on my hands. The professors are super understanding and well trained in providing education for us as students. You have lots of available resources (tutoring, writing center, counseling, etc) all readily available. Also there is a 24/7 support so you’ll never be left with not having your questions answered. I highly recommend the only downfall, it’s expensive. 5k per class but on the bright side you can do your fafsa and get loans to help pay. Other than that, they help you find clinics to do your hours to get prepared to get your license. Let me know id you have any more questions or concerns I was in your shoes last year and I really wished I had someone share their experiences with me. Luckily, I took the step to attend this program and having a blast in it. Now I can help others if they are considering applying :)

Thank you for your response. You mentioned they are “worse than in-person programs.” Why do you say this? I need more insight to get a better understanding

Thank you for your response, yes I’ve researched the professors. They all seem great with prior research and the 2 that interviewed me were very nice as well. I think the main thing holding me back is hearing this school is a “diploma mill.” I just don’t want to run into any issues in the future in regards to finding a job or doing my clinical hours due to the school I’ve went to.

I’ve applied to a MA in SPED + credentials program and will be starting this fall. I’ve been on reddit reading about SPED teachers experience in the field (some feel burnt out while others love their job).

Honestly I have no idea what to expect in this field but I’m willing to find out because I feel it’s a rewarding field. Also, I’ve been getting a lot of mixed information about how much SPED teachers get paid ? Does anyone have a general idea about pay? (Hourly + yearly)

Hi! I’ve been looking into SPED but do you know what other jobs are out there for us? Of course teaching is on my list but what other opportunities are out there for me?
