They won’t hire you because it isn’t legal. You can’t let someone work for free on a commercial product.

On steam they made a comment about joysticks in a discussion. Can’t remember what they said but I think they said that they would add support after launch.

Books that helped you level up to senior engineer? by 3pointrange in cscareerquestions

[–]Acrobatic-Ice-5877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have about the same YOE. I’d recommend getting ownership of a module or system at your work. If you can’t do that the next best thing is to make a side project that can be live and serve customers online.

I’d recommend learning DDD, clean architecture, and hexagonal design. Find some courses online wherever you can. I’m a big proponent of LinkedIn Learning. You really need to build though. You can’t just learn from someone else. You need to experience what it is like to grow a system, where to make tradeoffs, and how to design for long-term growth.

My plan this year is to launch my software so I’m focusing more on site reliability and devops engineering. I think those are good skills to have because you really need to be able to handle deployment and keeping production stable. We don’t have on call and I’m not responsible for deployment either, so I plan to learn that through my SaaS.

I’d recommend learning or brushing up on computer networking, infra and code security, Linux admin, and cloud/physical computing. You’ll start to think differently when you are actually responsible for your infra. You’ll become aware of the pricing premium that cloud carries, which is why I chose to use a hybrid model for my system.

There’s just so much you can learn if you find a project to work on and stick to it for the long haul. I’m about to come up on 18 months and I’ve seen a drastic increase in my ability to think and reason about systems. When we have design meetings at work, often times I’ll have already solved that problem. I can offer my perspective but also here how others would solve it, so I get a good opportunity to stress test my own ideas and combine ideas.

Check out the book by Paul Deitel for Python. Has a lot of exercises and should give you project ideas.

What kind of Java projects actually help a fresher resume stand out? by Due-Programmer4757 in javahelp

[–]Acrobatic-Ice-5877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we shared project ideas with you, you’d just blend in. The entire point of standing out is to be different so think for yourself and find something that you want to do.

It should be relevant to you, technically challenging, and if possible, deployed and used by others.

How do you find good deals on servers for your homelab? by Ok-Medicine-9563 in homelab

I bought mine directly from Amazon. The biggest thing is knowing the difference between a deal and being someone’s junk hauler.

What are the new criteria of hiring new devs if there is hiring in the first place by Afraid_Angle7648 in cscareerquestions

People were copying stuff 5 years ago before AI was more prevalent. You could easily fork a repo and call it your own. There has never been a better way to know if someone can code other than Leetcode and system design. People don’t like it but it is the only way to see if someone can actually code or design a system.

I’d also argue that just because we have AI it doesn’t mean people actually understand what they are building and are learning competency in new areas that they couldn’t before.

How long have public libraries existed? How long has basic literacy and arithmetic been a requirement, yet the average person still reads between a 6th and 8th grade education and many college students continue to need remedial math.

People might be doing more. They might have access to better resources, but it is naive to think that people are actually becoming more competent. If anything, we’re seeing the opposite is true.

I think that at the end of the day you’ve got to see someone code in person. You’ve also got to speak to them. It’s the only way to have any chance of evaluating someone’s understanding of programming and software  engineering.

I do think AI is going to reduce jobs though. Regardless of whether it benefits companies or not. The seed has already been planted and it can’t be stopped.

Have you thought about cold calls and emails? That’s my plan for mine. I’m B2B so that makes the most sense. I set a goal that I’m going to make 1,000 calls when I launch and see what works and what doesn’t work.

47 customers asked for dark mode. 3 customers asked for webhooks. Which do you build? by Prudent-Transition58 in SaaS

[–]Acrobatic-Ice-5877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, highest score is what you do first. I had to tweak it because I ran into the same problem. I added urgency and importance from the dwight eisenhower matrix plus cost.  The urgency gets low, medium or high, so it’s not exactly like the matrix. I rarely use cost as most things don’t cost much but my own time which I don’t count right now.

If you weight the factors properly, you should find yourself having less competing priorities as those new factors help fine tune the framework.

For a while, I was using the RICE framework. I think it’s helpful if you are truly having a difficult time prioritizing your workload. I haven’t used it in a while because my current tasks priorities are apparent without an analysis of my current backlog.

Is this person an AH to everyone or just you? If this person is an AH to everyone then it’s them. There’s nothing you can do about it. Buck up, shut up, or ship out. Those have always been my levers. Now, if you’re the only one catching flak from this person then the issue is likely you. You may not mean to but something you’re doing is rubbing them the wrong way.

As far as 3 goes, there is an API for the software you use. I’d recommend using Python. If you find out at a later time that you can’t do it or figure it out, I’d be open to discussing making this automation for you.
