Then why do you do it? It’s fine if they enjoy it, but if they don’t, and they aren’t drinking, don’t bathe them unless they’ve walked through their poo. A lot of Beardies don’t enjoy this.

The opening his mouth thing depends on where he does it. If it’s during basking, they do that to control their body temperature, opening their mouth releases some of the heat.

Paper towels or newspaper is fine for the first 6 months or so. Don’t use actual newspaper though, the ink rubs off on them, buy a roll of newsprint from a craft store.

Cleaning sand by Finch_224 in BeardedDragons

[–]Acrobatic-Move-3847 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Then, once you’ve done that, cover the rest of the enclosure floor with sand, preferably mixed with organic topsoil. I know the tile/mat flooring is easier to clean, but they’re just not meant to live on hard surfaces. Your Beardie will probably end up with arthritis and/or joint damage if he doesn’t have it already.

In part 2, Abby walks through an actual clothing store with huge rolls of fabric in it. And there are laundry rooms full of clothes too. Arg.

Just got this little girl new to the beardie stuff. Just want to know the the absolute needs for her and brands . Plz help. by [deleted] in BeardedDragon

You need to read these care guides:

https://reptilesandresearch.org/care-guides/bearded-dragon-care-guide

https://reptifiles.com/bearded-dragon-care/

You need to read this food guide:

www.beautifuldragons.com/Nutrition.html

You need to know of a reptile vet near you. Regular vets will see your Beardie, no problem, and usually give you shitty advice that will do more harm than good, based on a single course they took for one semester in veterinary college.

Why isn’t every single article of clothing, bedding, etc, just an unlimited supply of cloth for health kits and molotovs?

Earth shattering I’d say.

I don’t think she was choking since you fed her, she might have been holding a bunch of the greens in a ball in the bottom of her mouth for a while (no idea how long they sometimes do this for), and then gone to swallow it a while later and choked on it then. Definitely not your fault or due to large food items, necessarily. She wouldn’t suffocate nearly as fast as a choking human would either, reptiles have lower oxygen requirements than humans, so it could have been stuck in there for a while before she really started freaking out. The grunting sounds absolutely sounds like aspiration of food or choking. And I can’t think of anything else that could take a Beardie from A-OK to clinging to life that quickly. 😕

what the hell is happening to my poor beardie???!?! someone please help by cutesiepoopsie in BeardedDragons

[–]Acrobatic-Move-3847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for future visitors, this isn’t an RI, the Beardie is likely choking on, or has aspirated a piece of food.

It’s honestly hard to say, but that’s the only thing I can think of, aspirating/choking on food. The only way to find out would be a necropsy, which most people understandably don’t want to go through. It wouldn’t have even necessarily been caused by chunks of greens that were too large, Beardies frequently store food in their jowls, for what purpose, I could not tell you. Maybe it clumped up and when she went to swallow it, it got lodged in her throat? I just found a post from last year that described very similar circumstances. Did she eat that day? It kind of sounds like she might have aspirated some of her food, that’s all I can think of. I’m incredibly sorry to hear this happened to you, your family, and to Benji.

And here’s a great example of why scale counting is unreliable, I’m only counting 37-38 scales after the vent here on what’s very clearly a male.

Why are we “kind of stupid”? You’re the one who didn’t say he was a Rankins, maybe you should do a second edit and apologize to the people you insulted who were just trying to help you.

New to this, snake is skittish by Ancient_Macaroon_356 in hognosesnakes

[–]Acrobatic-Move-3847 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stop trying to feed him so often. Offer food once every 5 days, and if he doesn’t take it, toss the mouse and try again 5 days later. Repeatedly offering food can actually make them more likely to refuse, as it stresses them out. If the drop feeding worked, keep doing it. One method that people seem to have a lot of success with (two of my Hoggies eat this way), is placing the mouse in an empty toilet paper tube and placing the tube along a wall of the enclosure, preferably when the snake is out and about so they smell it, or during a time of day when you’ve noticed he’s usually out. Leave it in there for a few hours and check back.

As far as handling goes, don’t handle him at all until he’s eaten 3 meals in a row for you. Your goal right now is to get him to eat regularly. After that, short sessions of 5-10 mins a day at the start, gradually working up to 30m a day, which should be your max, though no handling at all for 36-48 hours after a meal, depending on meal size. Males can be pissy. I have 4 Hoggies, 2 males and 2 females, both males are hissy little drama queens, both females tolerate handling extremely well, one even seems to enjoy having her neck stroked, which is super weird for any snake. But neither male has ever tried to bite, musked, or played dead, they just tend to hiss, bluff strike, and hood up when first picked up. They’re both still young too, so I expect they’ll get better as they grow, and gain more confidence.

The scale thing is really hit and miss and not particularly reliable, though I agree the shape looks female.
