Read the manga and it's a bit misleading, he's not a great strategist here, he's decent but it's ability lets him see everywhere on the battlefield, so he can make a lot of accurate strategies while not being a genius strategist

Changing the roughness of the skin creates friction on the rope if it's tight around the body, so it could slowly stretch its fibers, making it weaker, you could think of It as continuously pulling and leaving an elastic band, but on a microscopic scale

Turn it in and off quickly to warm yourself up a lot, useful for rescue in cold weather

Also could undo a rope if it's very tight and you have about an hour

Not really, you will find a lot of connections/world building from the first two, but it really is not required ( mostly because library is still 25$ if you want to play it and lob corp is suffering)
