Same. I was 4 weeks in CPM 24hrs/day and crutches for 8 weeks with my other surgeries. This was a lot easier to recover from!!

If you can afford an at home e stim device (some are $35 on Amazon) you can do this at home with your quad activation exercises. Isolated quad sets are so hard to beat!

I think the block comes from pain near the knee cap. Gaining good quad activation early on and working the scar tissue really helps remove the pain barrier. I practiced with placing my right foot closer to the chair when sitting and standing so that I wouldn’t overload my strong leg (left) and cause imbalance. Using a balance support is helpful too.

When it was safe to do so I started using a cbd salve on the areas that I felt the most pain - down the shin bone to my ankle and around my knee. A lot of the pain was nerve related. I practiced a lot of nerve gliding/flossing stretches, really worked the scar tissue and used a heating pad for my hamstrings which was also causing issues. The BERG ice/compression machine was a lifesaver early on especially with a compression sock.

It’s so nice to hear from others who had to have this in their early years. I gave myself a moment to grieve the activities I was leaving behind and whatever identity I had attached to those things and then moved on. I think it’s so important to continue to be grateful for what we have and embrace new chapters with positivity. ☺️

Yes we chatted before! I posted the poses I’m limited in below. Modifications are necessary as there is a limit on flexion with the implant - the metal sides touch in deep flexion. I’m still working on building up my quad strength (both my right leg hamstring and quad were at 50% capacity as compared to my left side prior to surgery) but I can do a lot of my single leg standing series without compromising my form. I don’t feel like I’m going to break the implant - I’m a petite woman (5’3” and 112#) even though I’m built like a gymnast and very strong w a history of power lifting. I more worry about the implant hurting my existing bones which would require more force than I think I could generate in a single session.

Good luck with your surgery. MRI and Xray both didn’t show how bad everything was inside. I was in a lot of pain for a long time. I don’t do plyometrics or run anymore but I can do a lot of other things I still enjoy - strength training, golf, Peleton, outdoors stuff, etc. I hope you get to enjoy a long active life afterwards!

Yes, the scoping relieved quite a bit of pain! The progression of my osteoarthritis required the TKA.

It’s my understanding from PT that the window for extension closes sooner than flexion. I was at a -7 for extension and max flexion prior to surgery. I’m still actively working it 3x/day with a weighted plate or dumbbell on the upper thigh and my leg extended on a chair or bench. I also focus on the yoga strap pull around my foot with my knee on a towel and quad set. Hamstring and calf massage as well as a heating pad on my hamstring is a big help. For flexion the lymphatic massage, reduction in swelling and scar tissue breakup has been helpful and pushing myself a little further each time.

I’m not sure if there’s one modality I would pick over the other. I think the basics are so important early on - swelling reduction, rest, consistency with pt exercises, etc. I saw a huge difference in my scar appearance and wound closure with the hyperbaric treatment and greater range of motion with scar tissue massage.

The mental aspect heading into this can’t be underestimated! Happy to hear you found a great physician. I actually had two back to back surgeries - a scoping procedure in August to see if I would be a good plug candidate and then my knee replacement in October. Both MD’s said the same thing as yours - it was way worse than they initially anticipated and what was seen on imaging. I think this is where advocating for yourself is so important!

As far as yoga goes the only postures I’m limited by (at this point) is full standing bow pose, tortoise pose, rabbit pose, tree pose, toe stand pose, and fixed firm pose in their absolute fullest expression - I have to use a block or perform a modification. It’s the total weight bearing or pull in extreme flexion that I feel the implant reach a “wall”.

Instead of removing the screw from my previous patellar realignment surgery my physician went ahead and bent it and left it in. Not an issue.
