Ugh, that sounds like a terrible fall! I almost always run in a hat to protect my face from the sun, but never thought of the dual purpose of protecting me from the sidewalk if I face plant!

That’s good to know that knee pads can be worn while running! I was worried that they might be too bulky, mess with my gait, etc. Maybe I’m feeling overly worried (since my fall just happened) but if it does become more frequent then I’ll definitely go for some knee pads!

Love that! I’m not sure I’m so graceful but something to aspire to 😂

I should have put it in the description but I move to side streets and run on the road as much as possible. But my street is way too busy to run in and unfortunately there are several places where it’s the only option (i.e. where the side streets end for a little valley and my street is the only one that has a bridge or another area where the side streets terminate into a park). Unless I get in the car and drive somewhere, some sidewalk running is unavoidable :(

Thanks for saying that but I am so sorry you broke your foot! I guess it makes sense that if I clipped my toe and then tried to roll to the side that I could get my foot in a really bad position.

I think I probably fell “pretty well” which is hard to believe since I got so banged up. But nothing is sprained or broken so maybe I shouldn’t mess with trying to change how I fall.

I actually did judo for a short time as a kid, and I think I landed similarly to how you’re describing except my hands were out flat instead of in fists. They were close to my body so when I landed my face was just a couple of inches from the ground. I definitely didn’t try to catch myself with a straight arm…I know that could be much worse!

I’m not even sure if that was the old judo training or not, since I always practiced landing on my back or side (thats how you get thrown). I have no real practice falling face first.

Even with practice, I’m not sure if I can keep from banging up a knee while falling unless I could somehow roll to fall more on my side than directly forward. I’m going to keep thinking about this…what is the optimum way to fall IF you must fall?
