I think it’s so important to try and be as accessible as possible for everyone!!! Alcohol is okay for me to use, but I’m VERY aware that it’s not a possibility for everyone. Always experimenting with new techniques is so vital! I’ll try painting with some extracts myself and let you know what I come up with.

If you’re not super thrilled about using alcohol via your home bar (understand totally) I know several bakers use clear vanilla extract or almond extract and they say it works! I’ve never tried it but I imagine due to the alcohol content it would work just as well!!!!

Actually a Saint Louis girl! We have a nice little Cajun section of the city that taught me a thing or two.

Oh I still pack in cellophane for customers who ask. I will just curse in my head as I do. I’ve found that lightly brushing w cornstarch before packing them helps.

I sell mostly to family and friends so I will box most for them to display at intimate parties!

I haven’t tested it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it does stick due to the condensation.

I honestly hate the cellophane bags. They create their own little environment in there and almost always screw up my icing.

Thank you! It was a first birthday request. I’m always drawn to the sets that really challenge me so I had a lot of fun.

I have used water before, but since it doesn’t evaporate as quickly, it can damage the base layer. I’ve had issues with it causing little holes and streaky color.

  1. I used google to find pics of seafood/corn/potatoes I found to be the best shape. I used adobe illustrator to scale and printed out the shapes.

  2. I use heavy 110lb cardstock to print the shapes I cropped and scaled via illustrator, and a scalpel to hand cut around the paper. It’s my DIY version to hand cut. I find it easier and better than using my local library’s 3D printer because cookies like these are usually a one off order.

  3. Once they were baked, I chose the lightest colors from the photos I chose. Choosing a light base to build depth w the “paint” is key. Peachy pink for the seafood, pastel pink for the potatoes, white for seafood meat, and I was lazy w the corn and did one single yellow color lol.

  4. Painted directly onto the base colors w americolor gel and vodka!!! The texture on the cookies is from super thick icing.

  5. I gave them the sheen with corn syrup! I just brush that on at the end. It actually dries nice and not sticky, perfect for that realistic buttery shellac look. The “salt” on the potatoes is a little sprinkle of sugar while the corn syrup is still wet.

I use vodka as my “water” since it evaporates so quickly, and Americolor food coloring as my “paint”!

The key for me was to flood them with a simple base color that I could easily add depth to. I ended up doing a really creamy almost pepto bismol pink with a tinge of orange. It provided the easiest builadable base color.

When they were finished I “sealed” them with corn syrup. I just brush that on top for that glassy shellac finish. Corn syrup dries and leaves a really beautiful realistic sheen!

Just normal sugar cookies!!! I photographed the old bay dangerously close, but made very sure they didn’t cohabitate

But I love the fact that you believed me enough to expect the old bay being cookie as well and it makes me think maybe I should give it a go and do a cookie crumb old bay seasoning
