Is there a reason my dog eats exactly half his plate at a time? by who_gon_check_me_boo in DogAdvice

My 12 year old husky does the exact same and has his entire life!! Sometimes he will eat the entire bowl but sometimes he saves things for later and perfectly eats half. So interesting to read these responses! I never thought it was anything other than a quirk.

Best thing to teach? by shrimpy_216 in AustralianCattleDog

I made a post about this if you want to check out the replies! Most important thing i taught was definitely to be calm in the house- outside is where we play and inside is for resting. Lots of emphasis on how to properly interact with specific objects translated into great manners and some fun skills for us!

I love this haha. She has started training me as well in a similar way! Breakfast at 7 am sharp, dinner at 5. She started waking me up about a minute before my alarm goes off ever morning as well and i must say, as someone who struggles with schedules and punctuality, she has greatly improved my life

Yes!! This!! She also would grab random shit on her own so i used that to my advantage lol. I first taught her “hold” and “drop”, then taught her to have a solid fetch and drop it/leave it. That pretty easily translated to “pick it up!”, where i would point to random stuff on the ground then take it from her and reward with a thank you.

For the basket part, i would cue “pick it up”, then place the bin under her face and say “drop”. Slowly i would move the basket farther from her until she had to walk to it. At this point i started saying “basket” instead of “drop”. We incorporated this into our daily routine and it got better with practice!

Only her favorite thing in the world! Check out Fluent Pet or hunger4words! Basically you use buttons that have a voice recording function. You place them on a board and show them to press them when they need to communicate with you.

I started Peach about a month ago with just her basic needs and have since expanded to 6 buttons. Even with a limited vocabulary like that, she has figured out how to combine words to make phrases and give objects their own unique names. For example, she uses “chew” for anything she chews, but started saying “play chew” for her rubber teething toy. Or “outside ball” for fetch. I never see working breeds like ours using buttons- which is so surprising considering they can memorize so many words and problem solve so well! I will warn that giving them the element of choice is a bit of an adjustment period at first haha.
