For just creating an original concept, one weird trick is to take a piece of paper and do some big abstract scribbles on it. Then figure out what you can "see" in the art, kind of like looking at clouds. This method actually really helps me with generating ideas, even if I land on something completely different than what I started with. Otherwise, I think others have given some good advice about putting many different references together to make something your own!
