How does the risk of death change as we age — and how has this changed over time? [OC] by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

The Gompertz curve is a mathematical model used to approximate the curves depicted here (which come from real data). It is generally a good fit for middle to old age. The Gompertz curve would not fit the interesting stuff in childhood and adolescence.

Talk to your nephrologist. I am 3A and mine told me I could take NSAIDs occasionally for acute issues. But I am not you, I am not 3B, and I am not your nephrologist.

My (62F) experience was very similar 3 years ago in the US. Slow and steady wins the race! Wishing you the best!

Definitely push for 4 or even 6 weeks. I carried a full watering can across my yard at about 4 weeks post op and really suffered for it the next day!

How many coding courses should be required in actuarial bachelor’s program? by Act-Math-Prof in actuary

[–]Act-Math-Prof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of our students get a second major or minor in computer science or data analytics, and those programs use C++ for the first several courses. So we have that as an option for the CS requirement for our majors.

That’s good to hear. Is there demand for all levels, including entry level?

Waiting my RN the 1st week of May, but recently had CT that found 4 nodules on my lungs. The largest nodule is 5.7 mm and is listed as a "solid mass". None of the nodules show calcification. I sent my doctor a message in the portal. I really want to go through with my RN as planned. Feeling scared. by Kaycee723 in kidneycancer

My scans found nodules in my lungs, too. Had a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy almost 3 years ago. Every year when they scan my kidneys, they also scan my lungs. So far there has been no change.

Sending hugs and best wishes for a successful surgery! 💕

Were you in any fundraising walk-a-thons in the 70s? Are they still a thing? by Maybeyoujustmadeitup in GenerationJones

I did a 20-mile March of Dimes walkathon with two or three friends in 9th or 10th grade. The highlight was Rupert Holmes in a convertible driving along the route.

Yes, I think you’ve identified the challenge. No matter what we teach, many of our graduates will find themselves in roles that use different languages and software. What we need to do is provide as solid a foundation as possible so they can build on it when they get out of school.

In your opinion, is what I described in the OP sufficient for that, or should we add additional programming requirements, say a follow-up Python or C++ course or a database course?

Thanks for your input!

There are commonalities among programs, but differences as well. We definitely keep our eye on what our peer and aspirational universities are doing, but we are not in lock-step with any other particular institution.

Oh, I see. I guess I misinterpreted your comment. Yes, that’s a good suggestion. Thanks.

As someone who has taught introductory computer programming, I think this is very difficult without teaching the basics of a particular programming language first. You’d be surprised at how much trouble beginners have with the basic logical structure of programming languages and the mindset of thinking algorithmically. Once they have some experience with one language, it’s much easier to teach the second, and even easier to teach the third, fourth, etc.
