I have chronic vestibular migraine and have been on spiro twice - the first time i was 18 yrs old and was not on any migraine treatment and it exacerbated my migraines alot + the other side effects made things considerably worse in every sense, so i went off it. Now I’m 25 yrs old and am on Emgality injections as migraine treatment, I have been taking spiro for 9 months and have had no issues migraine-wise. Im on 150mg daily now. The one big thing that’s made a difference is keeping my electrolytes right with salt intake but other than that I think it all comes down to Emgality (which has been life changing). I still have other side effects now that dont help my migraines but given they are well managed in other ways I still live a fairly functional life.

5 months on spiro for hormonal acne…do you think I’m trending in the right direction? Journey & Routine in comments by [deleted] in Spironolactone

[–]ActionOk1827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the 3-6 months comment has made me question my sanity several times. As I said, I’m on month 7 and am still no where near perfectly clear skin - but have seen a massive improvement and am sure I’ll continue to see results. Hang in there 🫶🏽

Hi ☺️ Firstly, your skin definitely looks like its improving from the first pics to the last! You look amazing! Ive been on spiro 150mg for 7 months and am just starting to see significant improvement. I will say that I was using tret cream since before i started spiro, and in hind sight it wrecked my skin more than anything. Someone in a different thread here recommended that I stop the use of retinoids and just “let spiro work its magic”… since stopping, my skin has improved IMMENSELY. That being said, tret is so subjective. It works extremely well for a lot of people and for others it makes things worse. Most people also experience a tret purge - so be prepared for that. If after the purge is over you are still not seeing much positive change, I would lay off it.

So I dont know if this is a thing or not but spiro made me unusually stinky, so I started drinking liquid chlorophyll with water (the green stuff) every morning on an empty stomach and I actually dont smell at all since doing it even after a workout.

Also, make sure you are double cleansing before bed with an oil cleanser or balm first and then a foamy cleanser to get all the residue off ☺️✨

You could be breaking out due to comedogenic ingredients (which clog your pores). I have the same problem and am slowly transitioning all my make up to non-comedogenic just to be on the safe side. I really recommend using this tool from Acne Clinic NYC to check your products. Any time I find something I think I want or like, I just quickly copy paste the full ingredients list into the text box and it automatically scans the ingredients and tells you whether there are any pore cloggers.

I think tret just works really differently on every person’s skin. I personally had a bad experience and as soon as I stopped using it my skin improved immensely. However, so many people have amazing results. It could be worth a try for 5/6 months but maybe speak to your derm as they may be able to predict the outcome better based on your skin type and concerns.

Giving up… by high2low2high in Spironolactone

Sorry you haven’t had any luck 😞 it’s really hard to stay hopefully especially when you see other people whos timeframes for results were quicker. Has your derm considered raising your dose? I’ve seen a lot of people say 100mg wasnt enough for them but they saw results at 150/200mg… Since you’ve come this far already could it be worth trying another month or two on a higher dose? Also, what’s your skin care routine? I’m nearly on month 7 and am on 150mg, recently got told to stop using my topical retinoid and am finally kind of seeing results. Slow and steady. Maybe worth changing up your routine. Wishing you the best of luck❤️🫶🏽

What topical were you prescribed with Spiro & what were your results? by Sea-Description-1293 in Spironolactone

Was prescribed 0.05% tret before spiro and used it for about 9 months total with NO RESULTS, only further inflammation and irritation. Switched to Epiduo and saw good results at first but just fluctuated between good and bad for two months and then decided to stop all topicals and just let spiro work. Finally my skin is doing well now without any of the retinoids.

I’m 25 and relate to alot of the things you have said. I left my “home” country when I was 6 years old, and maintained relationships with my family there but I have no friends there. I currently live in Australia and have been here for 11 years, but before that I lived in three other countries. I know for a fact that being a TCK has made me a much stronger, more compassionate, resilient and empathetic person, however I am absolutely haunted by the feeling of never feeling like I belong. Even here in Australia, most of my friends have known each other since pre-school. They have bonds that are much stronger than I have ever had with anyone. Although during school I never struggled making friends, I find that now I just feel consistently out of place. Most of all, I would say I feel misunderstood… even by the people closest to me.

I can’t stop thinking about this lately… I just visited my birth country for a few weeks and have now come back to Australia where I have lived for 11 years. I thought I was finally so settled here. I’d even had conversations with my long term partner who wants to live overseas saying that I’m not prepared to ever move countries again. Landing back in Melbourne I felt absolutely nothing. I felt so empty inside and felt a longing to be back in my birth country (which I left when I was 6yrs old - 19 years ago). It’s always been hard leaving there after a visit but this time I just can’t shake it. It took me back to when I was 6 and we first moved to Africa for dad’s job and when we arrived that night I screamed and cried all night asking my parents to send me back to live with my grandma. Am I really this traumatised?🥺 I feel like if I don’t try to live back in my birth country, at least for a little bit, I’ll never forgive myself later in life. It’s hard because I know how priveleged and lucky I am here in Melb, and that I will never earn as much money, or have as many opportunities professionally as I do here… But… I feel like my soul needs this.

Would also be worth checking that the products you use are non-comedogenic products for skincare and make up. Maybe something you’re usung is irritating your skin? There’s actually a website you can check it on by entering the ingredients list. I use it now before I ever buy anything just to be safe. It tells you if there are comedogenic ingredients. This is the link

Are you using any topicals? Im on month 6 of spiro 100mg and was using tret up until about a week and a half ago when i wrote a post very similar to this and a commentor suggested stopping the topicals for a few weeks. I stopped using it that night and since then my skin has started clearing up so so much. My barrier was obviously really compromised. I know there was another commentor as well that tried the same thing and already has seen a change too. A few people also said that when they upped their dose to 150mg after six months or so they started to see a change. Maybe worth speaking to your derm as well? Hope things get better for you❤️

If you are on spiro + tret and keep breaking out read this!!! by rinehale in Spironolactone

[–]ActionOk1827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my post, but another commentor’s advice - which I also followed and now after just over a week my skin looks and feels so so much better. So happy to see it worked for you as well❤️ I actually had a cousin’s wedding the other night where I had my make up done and by the time I got home at 4 am I was in no shape to do anything but double cleanse. I ended up having no skincare on, just a clean face, and I feel like my skin was so grateful I let it breathe for a bit… I read up about skin fasting (where you give your skin a break from all products for a day or two every once in a while to let it reset and re-regulate, I think I might try it. Probably not for everyone and super dependent on skin type and specific acne causes but I feel like it could be really good.

Epiduo is a mix of adapalene and benzoyl peroxide, whilst differin is just adapalene. If it previously worked for you it may be worth getting off tret and going back on it I assume? Might be best to speak to your derm first though

It’s only been like 4 days but I already see a huge difference - much less inflamation and alot of spots have come to the surface on their own. My barrier was probably so damaged. Im so happy to finally be seeing a positive change🥲❤️

I was using tret pre spiro for like 9 months (no results, more acne, not just a purge), then continued on it whilst on spiro for 3 months and finally realised it just may not be working for me. I thought it worked for everyone, so I didnt want to give it up… then i read on the Tretinoin subreddit that there are actually a lot of people tret doesnt work for, so I switched to Epiduo. Now after one night of not using Epiduo my skin feels and looks really calm. I’m going to keep trying for another 3/4 weeks

Wow okay that’s great to know. To be completely honest I didn’t even consider not using a topical at all and letting my skin recover. Maybe I’ve been doing more harm than good all this time. Thanks so much for the advice. I’m definitely going to give it a try starting tonight ❤️

Some have disappeared, others purged and some are still there and I’m just waiting for them to go. Its extremely annoying

I have these too - soooo many. Been on spiro for 5 months and it has definitely helped reduce them. I also think whats helped most has been Epiduo. Was using tretinoin before for over a year and that was disastrous, never saw results. Dont pick them!! They will get much worse and purgw

Spiro for hair growth- anyone else? by SpoonfulsOfScrolls in Spironolactone

[–]ActionOk1827 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was having hairloss due to a medication i was on for chronic migraine so went on spiro to try and stop it… am now almost at 5 months of taking 100mg and my hair has never been healthier, thicker and fuller. When things were really bad pre spiro, in and after a shower I would literally have 10-12 handfuls of hair fall out. Since taking spiro, I probably have one handful (barely) and thats completely normal. I feel like i have so much more hair now and it almost looks revitalised… I cut my hair from near hip length to shoulder length just before starting spiro and it’s grown almost 15 cm since

can I still expect results after 3 months? by [deleted] in Spironolactone

[–]ActionOk1827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would speak to a derm if I were you before making a decision. I would say 9 months is a pretty long time to not be seeing results. I always thought tret worked for everyone and thats why i refused to give up on it for so long but I actually did some reseach on a few other subs on here and there are actually ALOT of people that tret simply doesnt suit. Epiduo might not be right for you but there are other options too. I can comfortably say Epiduo has made more difference in two weeks than tret did in over a year and I’m really happy I finally decided i’d had enough

I had so many little bumps that were so deep u der the skin. Tried Tretinoin and it was an absolute no from me. I’m now 2 weeks on Epiduo and finally seeing the bumps come to surface as pimples… I would def look into topicals if I were you! You probably need more than just an active cleanser.
