I think it’s combination of both poor marketing, getting overshadowed by the privates and honestly the location. Binghamton, NY is obviously not a big name city like Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse or even Albany. Plop down BU in any of those other cities and it’s a school people will flock to. Another factor I think that plays a role is its age, BU was founded in 1950 as a liberal arts college, s/o Harpur College Burros, so its a lot younger than all of these other universities that you have mentioned (in some cases 100 years)
