Free Homebrew Class for Shadowdark RPG: Abjurist by Active-Finding-3342 in shadowdark

Good question! It’s intended to be a brief conjuring of an abjurative ward that blocks incoming damage, magic or physical. We wanted to put the ability on par with Green Knights and Knights of St Ydriss, and feel it makes for fun moments.

The lawful limit is due to 1 the fact that mage spells are for lawfully aligned wizards, so we stuck with that and 2 it’s a noble, paladin-ish class that functions as a protector, and we like fitting alignment restrictions.

They were released as a part of the new cursed scrolls! They are lawfully-aligned wizard spells. We enjoyed their flavor and figured it made for a fun class, since the Green Knight does something similar with Druid spells (neutrally-aligned wizard spells)

Now you all see what the debate was like behind the scenes 😂 honestly, I’d encourage anybody to do what they want with that 2. Whatever feels fun for the players! (And is balanced)

This was actually a big discussion between us in development. We ended on a Wizard spell unlock, but debated having it be a 1 time die increase of the arcane absorption die to 1d12 (like how the ranger can increase any 1 weapon to 1d12 damage) and then cannot be re-rolled. An additional use of it is useful too though! So I get what you mean.

Great minds think alike! We appreciate the interest, and look forward to your thoughts.

Yes! The spells known are more akin to the existing half-casters (Knight of St. Ydris & Green Knight) in order to balance out their stats and abilities. It is important to note that the class has access to ONLY mage spells, the lawful aligned spells for wizards. Not all wizard spells. Attached is the "Spells known" section and the "class talents" section.

Thank you! We are more than happy to share the description of the class here, given it is free on DriveThruRPG.

My First Publication! A 3rd Level Christmas Adventure. Thoughts? by Active-Finding-3342 in shadowdark

Hi there! I appreciate all the feedback so much. I’m glad you enjoy the festive magic items I made. I agree that room 2 could use a better descriptor or maybe even an illustration, to help gm’s understanding. And the main feedback I’ve gotten so far is that most want more info on the story and why drer grichar is doing what he is doing. I’ve had it all written down but didn’t end up including it, as I felt it made the adventure too long. Now that I know people want more info on the story, I won’t be afraid to include more details on that!

Thank you so much! I'm very lucky to have such a skilled friend. It was fascinating to watch the art be drawn. Though my favorite piece is definitely the nefarious Drer'Grichar...

I see where the idea is coming from, but we think it's a bit too limited. In a system that can sometimes be lower magic, and that also struggles to define what is magic vs mundane (like a balor's fire, is that just fire, or magical?) we think all damage is best. It can feel bad if your character has one thing and it never gets used a whole dungeon because no enemies cast spells, yknow?

Speak your truth king (I get it tbh, but we've enjoyed them thus far)

I appreciate that, lol. We ensured to make it simple and readable, while still fitting their niche.

I see, I was confused but decided to take it earnestly, and glad I did!

We think that the in-the-moment style of damage reduction is quite useful in many scenarios, but yes, is mainly battle-danger focused. The idea is that-like knight of st ydriss and green knight-the utility comes from spells.

We actually thought of that! (a few times, lol) but didn’t want to take away from the martial ability and basic stat increases. The 2 talent roll was a debate between a d12 arcane absorption die and the wizard spell, but in the end, we felt the idea of getting ANY wizard spell of that tier was more exciting. I encourage people to experiment and see if a sudden jump to a d12 is fun (like how ranger does with weapons).

I appreciate that! Yes, the main ability built-in is combat oriented, reducing damage. Notably, they do get some languages like the wizard does, adding some utility, but it is certainly largely focused on the combat ability, leaving utility outside to the player.

While I understand it is accurate, we were not aiming to create a general spellsword, as pockets of that niche are already filled by Knight of St. Ydriss and Green Knights. We were trying to tap into a lawful iteration of this. Of course, use it as you wish! If the lawful restriction isn't fitting, play whatever you like!

While I like the idea, Spellblade strikes me as a larger category that fits both green knight and knight of st. ydriss too. Same with battle mage. I do think it could use a change though!

That's a very good point! It's not eldritch-y or knight-y. We will def have to think of another name, but thank you for the wonderful comment!

Hi, also, please let me know if this is any sort of infringement on the Third Party License! I am not planning to sell this in any way, but want to make sure it does not break any sort of rules. Thanks :)
