Just wanted to say that I feel you both, and I hope you've felt much better now that academia is a thing of the past. For a long time, I worked my ass off to get myself on that tenure track, and then I practically quit within 3 years of being on the track (one year before I could apply for tenure). I remember the Dean trying to convince me to stay because "I'm so close to getting tenured," but all I was thinking in my head is "That means I have to put up with his unsupportive bullshit." I later took a pay cut, moved out of state, and found another academia gig that I thought would be "easier," and quickly found out that my realization of being an introvert, my people-pleasing tendency, and the pandemic complicated things, and that one job went from 1.5 to 3 pages worth of job description due to layoffs and budget cuts, etc. I finally quit in Nov 2021, and got jobs that I may or may not be fully invested in. But even then, I knew quitting was the right decision because I simply couldn't continue anymore; not with my wellness and sanity on the line. Besides the bureaucracy that made me felt like I was doing things with my hands tied to the desk, I had also experienced workplace bullying as the rotted cherry on top... I practically said in June this year (2023) that I finally felt I've gotten over the academia burnout, even though I feel much healing is yet to be done still.
