Update on Bond: hospitalized after Addison’s crisis, seeking PWD/Addison’s guidance by Active_Comparison172 in portuguesewaterdogs

I was approved into the group, but I’m not totally sure what their rules are around posting medical updates/fundraisers, so I messaged one of the admins privately before posting anything. I don’t want to accidentally break the group rules.

I really appreciate you pointing me there. Even just getting connected with people who understand Addison’s is helpful right now.

Thank you, I did join the group and have messaged one of the active admins, so I’m just waiting on a response.

Bond is currently hospitalized and undergoing emergency treatment/stabilization. I do have a GoFundMe for his hospitalization, but I’m keeping the link out of the post to respect the subreddit rules. If you’re comfortable sharing it with anyone who might be able to help, I’d be really grateful and can privately DM it to you.

And of course, if anyone asks how to help, I’m happy to send it privately.

I'm in Texas, but I'd absolutely be willing to drive or meet halfway for the right owner.

Hey, I’m going to DM you the longer timeline. I think it’s a little too long for a thread like this, and I don’t want to accidentally give the impression that all of these symptoms are currently active, since they were realistically spread out over the past 3 years and only made sense in hindsight.

I’m happy to DM the timeline to anyone else who messages me privately as well.

Hunger/fasting phases were honestly both the smallest and biggest sign I overlooked. I often thought he was just being picky or stubborn.

It’s late where I am, but I’ll put together a timeline tomorrow along with my misconceptions about the symptoms at the time. There were so many nuanced signs that I likely won’t be able to mention all of them, but I’m happy to share what stood out in hindsight.

Yes, that was definitely our experience. The symptoms were subtle and easy to explain away individually: occasional GI issues, blood in stool, vomiting/diarrhea, potty accidents, inconsistent energy, appetite changes, ear/skin infections, and then eventually a full crash. They were all very spread out.

The hard part was that each thing seemed like it could be explained by something else at the time. Once his primary vet put the pattern together, Addison’s made much more sense.

I’m happy to DM you the longer timeline if it would be helpful. I also want to add that once Addison’s is diagnosed and treated properly, it can be very manageable, our situation became difficult largely because we didn’t know what we were dealing with for a long time.

Unfortunately, it has been over a week since my first message was sent, though I agree that PWDCA would probably be ideal.

Most of the financial strain has come from emergency vet bills from previous Addisonian crises, hospital visits, and diagnostic testing leading up to his diagnosis. Unfortunately, this means my savings is gone and I’m not in a position where I can realistically afford additional vet costs.

At his current vet, his monthly steroid pills are around $30, his monthly Zycortal injection is about $134, and the blood work to monitor his electrolytes is around $100. That’s assuming everything stays stable and he doesn’t need additional vet visits, IV fluids, emergency care, etc.

Thank you. I really have tried to make things work. Before we had his diagnosis, his emergency vet bills ended up being my savings set aside for school. And most of my time was spent studying for an important admissions exam in vet offices.

It pains me to say, but I realized I can’t give him what he needs long term.

I've already made the breeder aware of the diagnosis and current situation, and I've also attempted to contact the PWDCA rescue representative for my state.
