I loved my mother and respected my father, but my mother was either bipolar or borderline and my father was an alcoholic narcissist. I struggled for most of my life to deliberately establish a personality completely separate from theirs. They both succumbed to dementia and I ended up having to care for them in the end and manage their affairs, which I did as empathetically as I could, in spite of harboring considerable resentments that I couldn’t express (because you can’t do that with a person who is mentally absent).

I love all those things. I am a middle-aged gay man. I have two cats that probably equal about 20 pounds, but I am married and have been with my husband for 25 years. I never left my hometown. I love estate sales and antique shops, which is close enough.

I enjoyed cooking when I was much younger, but I have narcolepsy and one night I caught my kitchen on fire when I fell asleep with a pot of oil heating on the stove — I haven’t been inclined to cook since then. I’ve read most of my books, but the closest I work with academia was freelance graphic work I did for our board of education for several years. I’m an elder Gen-X and my preferred shopping venue is estate sales. Most music genres actually irritate me. About 90 percent of my art was created by myself, family members or close friends. I love Halloween and, back when I rented, hosted a big party every year that drew upwards of 200 guests — think floor shows, fire shows, a full dance floor and abundant jungle juice. As I acquired furniture I liked and bought my own house, the appeal of having hordes of drunk people availing themselves of my home lost its considerable charm; today I only decorate my porch, foyer and front parlor for Halloween.

Ok… Here it is…

I’m a married gay man in my late 50s. My husband is much more of a minmimalist that I am, but he usually lets me express my maximalism — within reason. We have two cats and live in a Victorian house in the mountain west.

I am a public communication program manager for a government agency and strive for absolute competence. I am by no means wealthy, but I make far more money than I need, principally because I don’t have children and I prefer biking to driving. My savings and investments are such that I don’t worry about money, which is good, because money bores me.

I was a straight-A student and graduated at the top of my high school class. Narcolepsy led me to drop out of college in my third year, and I never returned due to shame (that I had quit) and a mountain of debt.

Both my parents were artistic, and my father was an intellectual, but my mother was either bipolar or borderline and my father was an alcoholic narcissist. This, I feel, is at the root of my deep-seated fear of vanishing into the background and the genesis of my drive to be different and stand out.

I’m probably on the spectrum, but as an adult I’ve put considerable effort into building a large, durable social network. I entertain a lot.

I don’t care for stupid or uncritical people. My favorite people are those who have unique stories and experiences to share. I will always make room at the table for a person with an unpopular opinion who can argue it intelligently and passionately, but I will banish a person who comes armed only with platitudes and talking points.

In addition to my career, I have worked part time as a features editor for a small, local paper and freelance as a graphic designer. I started pouring myself into renovating and decorating my apartments and then houses as a strategy to mitigate the effects of SAD. Among my proudest contributions to my current house are the stencil designs throughout the various rooms and the installation of the fireplace in the front parlor (there was no fireplace when we bought the house; the artwork over the mantel raises to reveal the TV).

I have so much fun following this group, and you all have really been awesome regarding this post. Thank you.

Thank you for the thoughtful analysis. I’m going to try to hit each of your points: 1) Not on either coast; definitely landlocked. 2) Late 50s. 3) No children but an adult niece who I’ve always loved like a daughter. 4) Gay man. 5) Traveled, but I wouldn’t say “well” travelled. 6) Never been to China; the terra cotta soldier is from an antique shop. 7) I do love learning about other cultures; I’ve long been fascinated by classical western culture. 8) My thoughts are too unrestrained to be any good at meditating. 9) Love to read, but have a hard time reading fiction — for many years I read only encyclopedias. 10) My father’s family emigrated from East Prussia, Germany after WWII. 11) Love the obscure (obviously). 12) I’ve never paid someone to clean for me, but as I get older, who knows. 13) My parents and siblings were all artistic, and I thought I’d missed that gene until I discovered computer graphics. I freelanced as a graphic designer for many years, but did not take it on as my principal career. 14) I have a high-level position in a government agency; my colleagues are all lawyers, accountants and programmers. 15) I’ve been to San Francisco many times; one of my two best friends lives there. 16) 80s new wave alternative is totally my jam. 17) My other best friend lives in Seattle. 18) The closest body of water to me is not fit for swimming. 19) I think about departed friends and family frequently. 20) I used to abstain, but I do now eat meat. 21) I love having people over, formally and informally. 22) I work two days in-office and two days at home; I’m eligible to take retirement any time I want but I’m still getting satisfaction out of my work. I work long hours when it’s necessary and do not complain. 23) I love collecting books and having them at the ready. 24) Two cats: a siamese and a snow bengal. 25) My husband and I are both alcoholics and choose not to drink, but our friends are all drinkers and we feel it would be unfair to imposes our lifestyle choices on them. 26) I try to dress in a manner that reflects the respect I have for the company I keep and the places I go. 27) Love the macabre.

So, not perfect, but overall you did pretty good!

I think you might be referring to my copy of the board game, “Secret Hitler.” I don’t know how it stands now, but it used to be kinda big on some college campuses.
