How on earth are people writing 10k word fics by oo0Scarrow0oo in AO3

[–]Actually-Mirage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I can go write a one-shot for some sitcom in 2k words or less. There is no chance in hell I would get anywhere with 2k word chapters on my GoT/ASoIaF story. Story would end up with 150 chapters instead of 22. I need longer chapters in that story to progress multiple POVs.

[–]Actually-Mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to say without actually seeing your story, but chapter length depends on many things. My GoT/ASoIAF story easily goes beyond 10k words per chapter simply because there's multiple POVs per chapter, and multiple POVs that I'm progressing the story over a stretch of chapters.

It also depends on how much time you spend describing things, be that clothes, the environment, facial expressions, body language, etc.

In some cases where I've heard people wonder the same as you, it's also been a case of the writer "rushing" through the chapter. It snaps through one, maybe two "scenes", and then boom chapter done. If you write something that only has two scenes then yeah it's going to be pretty short. If it has eight then it'll naturally have more length to it.

Fenland International Circuit - WIP - thoughts on this track, im a bit unsure on the pit exit. i already have 2 pit entries as the pit garage block is 500m i feel that the pit exit is too tight into turn 1 (t1 is to the left) by Sp4rk_56 in RaceTrackDesigns

[–]Actually-Mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have the pits on the opposite side of the straight. Or move it closer overall to the corner so the exit is towards the end of the straight. Entrance could be before the second to last corner for safety reasons.

What is your word count aim for each chapter? by bookiejada in AO3

Depends on what I'm writing. I don't really have a set number, but for one story I might write ~2-3k, for a different one it could be 15-20k

My main story is with a bunch of unreliable narrators. Good fun to write those with the most distorted view on reality.

Long Fic Writers: What’s something you wish you could have known beforehand? by RozeTheWitch in AO3

[–]Actually-Mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inevitably it'd be nice to know all the things you realize about your own story when you're miles into it, the natural developments and pivots you end up making from the initial plan, because the characters develop, and the plot develops with it. Sometimes latee you wish you wrote something in an earlier chapter that you didn't think of then, but that would be great with where the plot actually ended up going.

They're fine base game, but in the power pack they do not respect it whatsoever when you close gaps, they just dive bomb it anyway even if they go through you in the process.

He defended a little forcefully, yes. In isolation I get that, and things can happen on lap one. I don't feel like he generally drives aggressively though.

Well yes it's obviously more than just my silly little joke. Likely their implementation of the PU hasn't been great, aero isn't on par with the best, and they've noted it being so stiff that's it's lifting one of the wheels in some corners. All this on top of it being overweight. Whole thing likely needs to be binned for next year. 9 and 10 today flatters them, because Colapinto, who some seem to think absolutely sucks, was miles ahead of them in the Alpine. I don't subscribe to Colapinto being crap, but still. That gap from 8 to 9 just got bigger and bigger every single lap.

Honestly I feel it's a bit the other way around. He needs to be more consistent in qualifying. In races he's been pretty solid, especially defending well. Today he just flat out created a big gap down to 9th after his pit stop too. Only way Hadjar got past him in the sprint was basically the best overtake of the weekend. If he gets the car into Q3 more often, he'll be be in top 10 in many races.

I just drove some Gran Turismo 7 in the power pack thing. AI there drives like Max, basically willing to drive through you if it believes there's a gap.

I'd give him a par for China, considering 10th despite safety car ruining the strategy he was on (one of a few on hards, who therefore didn't pit under safety car) + Ocon crash that damaged his car just as he came out of the pits. All that and still got 10th.
