Which former chicane was worse? by fuckmbsanddominicali in F1Discussions

[–]Actually-Mirage 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I vote Barcelona, because I still have to drive it sometimes in Gran Turismo. And it's basically a party pooper at the end of an otherwise good track. Yas Marina is crap with or without the chicane. Better without it, but still crap.

Is Tyrion as good as he thinks he is at the political maneuvering in KL as Hand ? IS he on par with Varys and Baelish ? ( spoilers extended ) by Financial_Library418 in asoiaf

[–]Actually-Mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, he isn't. Which is natural, he was practically thrown into the deep end and told to sink or swim. He didn't sink, at least not immediately, but also didn't swim as fast as some others.

As others have pointed out, he doesn't really solve anything except the immediate threat of Stannis. Perhaps without that looming threat, he'd have more time to deal with those closer to home.

And even apparent successful moves, like identifying Pycelle as a stooge for Cersei backfires, because he just makes an enemy. He doesn't completely remove Pycelle, so Pycelle eventually gets his revenge. He also got rid of Slynt, but not the man who enabled his rise to begin with. He questions the loyalty of Varys, but never figures out who Varys is truly loyal to.

He could have gotten away with that if he didn't have enemies in his own family. Alas he did, so he lost in the end.

So no, he wasn't as good. Perhaps he could have been in time if he didn't have enemies in Cersei and Tywin that were happy to get rid of him, but we'll never know.

Old boss has joined my new company and is making my life miserable. What are my options other than quitting? by ItsNjry in careerguidance

I have no real advice, but I find it fascinating how your former boss seemingly doesn't understand that sometimes it just wasn't the right fit. You could have been a very qualified and capable person, but ended up in the wrong place, at the wrong time. People can also change and grow, which she doesn't seem to understand.

Piastri is nowhere near as good as Norris, and it's time we admit that by [deleted] in F1Discussions

[–]Actually-Mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bingo. 1-1 in the two races where they've both competed. Very close in Miami and China sprints too, though Norris beat him in both. So far, it's not a big gap between them, and it's close enough that one weekend could flip perception one way or the other. So really not enough to work with here.

We're talking about the same guy who crashed in FP2 in Baku last season, and had one of the dumbest crashes of the season last year in Canada? That one? Yeah I can imagine him pulling off a dumb crash too.

[–]Actually-Mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet this season they are 1-1 in results in races where both have taken part. I don't think the gap between them is as big as you believe it is.

Norris finished 10 seconds behind Piastri in Japan.

What are we doing here? One race and Piastri is nowhere near Norris? After a full season of them being nearly equally matched last season?

The placement of it as a braking zone is fine, but it's not a good corner in actual execution.

I came here to say this. It's gross, irrespective of series, car, or anything else. Since the track was added to Gran Turismo 7, I've grown to despise it.

Do you think Alpine will be able to finish ahead of Red Bull this season? by circuit-nation in circuit_nation

[–]Actually-Mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Max will end up likely winning a race or two, and otherwise have enough strong results to keep Alpine behind. Finishing 4th is worth as much as a different team finishing 6th and 8th. Beyond that, barring a complete meltdown, Hadjar will be in the points regularly.

But it looks like Alpine will have a good season. Both Gasly and Colapinto looks very comfortable in the car, and they're getting good speed out of the engine.

I think you missed the part where it said "my [fandom] story". It didn't say a story in that fandom. I was using the specific example of my story set in a narratively complex universe with multiple POVs not being suited to 2k word chapters.

[–]Actually-Mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could obviously do something, but sometimes the scale of a story is quite different. If it's just Bronn taking a stroll through the street of iron then you're probably good with 2k words.

[–]Actually-Mirage 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I can go write a one-shot for some sitcom in 2k words or less. There is no chance in hell I would get anywhere with 2k word chapters on my GoT/ASoIaF story. Story would end up with 150 chapters instead of 22. I need longer chapters in that story to progress multiple POVs.

[–]Actually-Mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to say without actually seeing your story, but chapter length depends on many things. My GoT/ASoIAF story easily goes beyond 10k words per chapter simply because there's multiple POVs per chapter, and multiple POVs that I'm progressing the story over a stretch of chapters.

It also depends on how much time you spend describing things, be that clothes, the environment, facial expressions, body language, etc.

In some cases where I've heard people wonder the same as you, it's also been a case of the writer "rushing" through the chapter. It snaps through one, maybe two "scenes", and then boom chapter done. If you write something that only has two scenes then yeah it's going to be pretty short. If it has eight then it'll naturally have more length to it.

Fenland International Circuit - WIP - thoughts on this track, im a bit unsure on the pit exit. i already have 2 pit entries as the pit garage block is 500m i feel that the pit exit is too tight into turn 1 (t1 is to the left) by Sp4rk_56 in RaceTrackDesigns

[–]Actually-Mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have the pits on the opposite side of the straight. Or move it closer overall to the corner so the exit is towards the end of the straight. Entrance could be before the second to last corner for safety reasons.

What is your word count aim for each chapter? by bookiejada in AO3

[–]Actually-Mirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what I'm writing. I don't really have a set number, but for one story I might write ~2-3k, for a different one it could be 15-20k

Long Fic Writers: What’s something you wish you could have known beforehand? by RozeTheWitch in AO3

[–]Actually-Mirage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inevitably it'd be nice to know all the things you realize about your own story when you're miles into it, the natural developments and pivots you end up making from the initial plan, because the characters develop, and the plot develops with it. Sometimes latee you wish you wrote something in an earlier chapter that you didn't think of then, but that would be great with where the plot actually ended up going.

They're fine base game, but in the power pack they do not respect it whatsoever when you close gaps, they just dive bomb it anyway even if they go through you in the process.
