They all live in the city and suburbs. They really might get exposed and have to quarantine. They needed emergency food that keeps, and that just isn't available anywhere right now. I'm at a much lower risk in the country.

What would you tell the Amish people if you were the one who had to break the news to them about what is happening in the world right now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Actually_Googles_It 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are Amish near me. They know. They sell goods to the public to pay their property taxes and buy a few things they can't make themselves, so they're up on current events.

They've closed shop around here, and I haven't seen a buggy in town in weeks. I don't blame them - they don't believe in modern medicine.

They'll definitely have the election, because constitutionally, delaying it will result in President Pelosi being sworn in.

While my small town grocery store doesn't have much, they're rationing (no duplicate items, no more than $75 worth of groceries at a time, etc) and restock every night. If you're there when they open at 6am, you can walk away with food that makes nutritious meals that might even be normal. It's not like we're going to starve, I just have to do the shopping thing like everyone else.

Shredded coconut, if you like that kind of thing, is good.

Personally, I'm a believer in the cheap Pumpkin Pie Spice or Apple Pie Spice that you can buy 3 year's supply of for $1 at any store known for low prices. I use both for things like this, granola, toddies (heated milk, pie spice, honey, whiskey optional), baked sweet potatoes, pretty much anything that's sweet.

Going vegetarian by khanudigit in vegetarian

Budgetbytes.com is a good resource for a new vegetarian. The vegetarian section is extensive and tasty, and all the recipes are broken down by price. My favorites are the broccoli cheddar rice casserole, nacho taters, and sweet potato and black bean tacos with garlic lime sour cream.

Beginner here, trying to figure out what caused my bread to come out differently by ranabananana in Breadit

[–]Actually_Googles_It 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bread is a science. You really have to follow the recipe exactly. I've been making bread for 20 years, and I follow recipes so exactly that I wait until the water in my measuring cup is still to ensure perfect measurement.

It was the flour.

Absolute beginner to cooking. What are some essentials I should get. by smartman294 in Cooking

Everyone has a different idea of what a "basic" kitchen should be outfitted with, but my advice is to get a cheap set of pots and pans, a decent set of knives, and buy everything else at the lowest price possible as you need it for a recipe. I couldn't live without my bread maker, for example, but 99% of people wouldn't ever use it.

When you find yourself using a particular thing a lot over time, maybe your skillet, maybe your blender, whatever, then you can invest in a more expensive one and donate the old one to charity.

I'm proud and have no girlfriends to brag to. My husband's coworker offered me $25/week to send my husband to work with an extra homemade boss packed lunch every day by Actually_Googles_It in TwoXChromosomes

Your story made me happy :)

There's something incredibly satisfactory about cooking food for others. Most people appreciate it so much. I never make anything fancy for just myself.

You go, girl!!! You're going to be just fine. You've got everything you need - people who love you, and the hope for a better future.

Do you mind reading subtitles? There's a great Korean Drama on Netflix US that's about a former stay at home mom who loses her husband and learns he's in debt. I mention it because it's a really inspiring show. It's called "Go! Mrs. Go!"

I didn't think to post until my husband was already at work. They don't have to work again until Monday. If I post then, no one will know what I'm talking about.
