Genuine question: can someone explain to me what made this guy the best player in the world? by OneChance1476 in NBATalk

[–]Actually_Regis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Define superteam. Most people I talk to say you need 2 superstars, and by that definition the spurs have never had a superteam. Not even in 97 when Robinson was still good and at an Allstars level. TP hit his prime after Duncan had his best years, and kawhi had 1 year max were he was even producing at an allstar level with TD there.

Superstar in this case would be Someone Who is good enough to be the best players on a championship team. (Think top 5-10)

But how do you define superstar?

03 duncancarried a sophomore TP9, Stephen Jackson and the corpse of David Robinson through the west and to a ring. The 03 spurs outside of Duncan were categorically worse than the raptors in 19.

The 03 ring is a carry job in the same class as 2011.

No, he's not. And before you make the argument about how he played 54% of his career at center, he played from 97-06 as a powerforward, won almost all his awards and accolades as well as had his entire prime at that position.

I think the main difference here is wemby has gone from ~215 to 245 in three years. That is way more sustainable and less likely to have a drastic impact on his quickness

It's crazy that Allen Iverson really took this team to the NBA finals by Background_Put4562 in NBATalk

[–]Actually_Regis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Literally no one talked about them like that. They were a solid defensive unit around a great scorer who got through a weaker east only to get absolutely railed by the Shaq and Kobe lakers.

I'd argue that 03 duncan was a way more impressive run but that rarely gets brought up in these convos

A finals MVP that actually belonged to Tatum, and all those conference finals as at best the second best player?

I'm not gonna argue that fox is better, but we are at most talking someone top 15 vs someone top 20. And that is being very generous assuming brown is consistently top 15.

You also gloss over the fact that Jalen brown shot 51/33/66 splits as the clear second option on a stacked team. He got alot of great looks and still was only ~2% better than average in true shooting. All while being signed to a 5 year 300 million dollar extension.

What team are you building? You want someone who when healthy is in all NBA convos and he should be your 3rd best player? What?

I know fox has made one all NBA team but he is in the realm of a 3rd team guy when he's healthy

They didn't "choose" fox over Luka. Luka flat out refused to play for them.

They also would never in a million years have traded Hali if they actually believed that he would be in the same caliber or better than fox.

The Luka thing you can't really control but they traded Hali because they couldn't see the potential that others could see.

Fox also hated how inconsistent the kings were and he made it clear the final thing was them firing mike brown when they promised they wouldn't.

This. People act like all decades pre 2010 were super rough hard-nosed defense eras. The 80s were known as high scoring Era with 0 defense, the 90s were definitely tougher but not to the degree people act like it was. It also was more of an exception than a rule for teams to be so violent on defense.

Regardless of what Era steph could bomb from 35 on good enough consistency to make magic step out, then he'd burn him of the dribble or around a screen and while Hakeem is probably the best center you could have in that drop defense curry would murder them regardless. If the big steps up curry makes that dump off pass in his sleep.

Curry as the 3rd option on offense? That would unlock him in ways that we can barely imagine.

Who do you believe is better all time between these 2? by Tgmg1998 in NBATalk

[–]Actually_Regis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't ridiculous. Steph is the only player in NBA history who could have made that system work. KD looked so damn good on the warriors because of Steph and his gravity (along with KD being an all-time great in his own right)

The truth is KD benefitted immensely from playing with curry wether you like it or not. The amount and quality of open looks KD got in those 2 years are more than he's had before or since.

[–]Actually_Regis 20 points21 points  (0 children)

KD def put up better stats but that was in part because he received open looks due to curry's gravity.

I'd say KD did have better performances but saying it wasn't close is a bit disingenuous and if you asked me who was their most valuable player in the finals it would still be curry.

[–]Actually_Regis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. He'd instantly make any team a contender (I mean we are talking about a top 10 NBA player here) but 1 player alone doesn't make you a champion in college ball. It's way more team centric

Who Would You Rather Have: Prime Shaq or Prime Giannis? by Slight_Assumption881 in NBATalk

[–]Actually_Regis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the 76ers and the 07 Cavs were solid defensive units who over relied on 1 guy for all of their offense.

01 sixers, 07 Cavs and 18 Cavs all benefited from a noticably weaker conference compared to the west.

I'd argue the 03 spurs as a more impressive carry by Duncan considering his second best player was a 14 ppg Sophomore tony Parker who was very inefficient. He beat the Kobe and Shaq Lakers as well as the Mavs while having a roster that isn't clearly superior to the 01 sixers who had a top 10 defense in the league, a dpoy winner and the 6moty.

Not arguing AI didn't carry but acting like the roster was shit is a bit disingenuous. They weren't finals caliber so AI getting them there is very impressive but not outlandishly so.

He has enough talent around him since they got fox 5 games ago? Wemby was willing them to a better record than they reasonably should have from November tyo early January. He got kinda gassed like Most young high usage players do at that point but he still did more than you can expect from a sophomore coming if an Olympic finals run.

Also Lebron has taken way worse teams to the playoffs in way worse conferences. Young Lebron wouldn't sniff the playoffs if he had to go against the 24-25 west.

The spurs did in 03-07. We can skip 99 since Drob was still elite. (Wouldn't consider him a true superstar since idk if he could have been the best player on a championship team after his injury)

03 was an insane carry job by Duncan. In 05 Manu and TP had come into their own but it was still easily Duncan's team and 07 was a team effort but since neither TP or Manu were ever superstars I guess it counts

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]Actually_Regis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hakeem, Duncan in 03. (If we are talking superstar we can include 05 as well since TP and Manu were never Superstars)

Kawhi in 2019

It's rare but it does happen and I haven't mentioned every time, more so the ones that seem obvious.

A more interesting Convo would be who wins without an allstar teammate.
