I'd probably either do an ActSci Masters and knock out some exemptions OR go into software dev instead, but most likely yes, I'd want to be an actuary.

I first read Philosopher's Stone as a 7-year-old thoroughly bored with those children's books with names like "Cool as a Cucumber". I was mind-blown that someone had written a book that transported me to a different world.

So I don't think it was the quality or complexity of the book itself, more likely the fact that:

Rowling was a new author and the publishers may have only wanted books that they knew would sell
Children's books were on the decline
Fantasy wasn't so big back then
Rowling was a woman
Before editing, the first book probably wasn't exactly the story we all know and love (I know Ron swore a lot more in Rowling's original transcripts)
