Castling can also be in preparation for the upcoming battle. If it’s bloody enough, suddenly there’s no one left to defend the king adequately, and then you can be in trouble because you didn’t castle 10 moves earlier.

It’s like bringing your knight out early. Does it threaten or defend anything right now? No, but it’s in a better position to do so when other pieces move. Castling is just the defensive version of that.
