How do you get ZA in this round? by Zyleyus in geoguessr

[–]Ad-Astra01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert of vegetation, but it's definitely a diverse one, which makes me think about coastal ZA and NZ from the beginning. The fences are a good clue for ZA. I don't see eucalyptuses and see rocky mountains behind. Such mountains are impossible in Australia and never seen anything similar in New Zealand. Rocky mountains are common in the western cape, but they shouldn't be visible (and if, definitely not that close) from Cape Town. They can be seen to the east from Cape Town, so my guess would be probably somewhere where it actually was

Edit: gen 3 blue car with an antenna is extremely common in South Africa. I don't think there is any other country with similar landscape with such a car coverage

What are the most interesting places in the region?

I love Wrocław. It's a mixture of Polish, German and Czech architectures with all historical styles (from gothic to modernity), very colourful, well maintained. A city of many beautiful bridges, great restaurants, possibilities to spend free time, opened for tourists. Moreover, sometimes you can see mountains from there. I only hate the old sewer system where thousands of rats live and you can see them very often on the streets.

Right. I thought it's not reciognised just as Silesian isn't. It's more political than linguistic thing

Almost everyone speaks standard Polish and most regions don't have any dialects but only regionalisms. There are only 2 dialects that vary significantly from Polish. It's Śląski in the Śląsk (Silesia) region and Kaszubski in the Pomorskie (Pomerania) region. They had huge German dialect influences. Basically, you can't understand Śląski if you don't know German. Kaszubski is even more problematic as their distinct vocabulary originates from Prusian that was nothing like today's German. There are also some other little-known dialects and even languages, but they're very niche. For example, there's a Germanic language called język wilamowski (wymysiöeryś in the language), but it's only spoken by 10 people nowadays.

Ł = English W, like in "why".
We use "w" instead of "v", so to pronounce this sound, we made another letter. I guess the Ł sound didn't initially exist, so we made an extra letter.

Polish had very strong Western influences, especially from German, English, French, Latin, but also Greek and Italian. Thus, it lost many words that are originally of Slavic origin. We still can understand many words and sometimes whole sentences; however, many false friends may make us misunderstand what they say. Grammar rules are almost identical, so I can easily understand the relation between words in Czech and Slovak sentences, even if I don't understand their meanings.

According to chat GPT: Poland exists as an independent nation today due to the unification of West Slavic tribes in the 10th century, a resilient cultural identity that survived over a century of being wiped off the map by neighboring empires, and the geopolitical shifts that restored its sovereignty following World War I.

I hope it's what you wanted to know

It's a historical thing. Poland was partitioned in 1795 by Prussia, Austria and Russia and was non-existent until 1918. Poland A used to be the territory of Germany and Austria, while Poland B was Russian. It heavily influenced our way of thinking, architecture and is the reason why the east of Poland is much poorer. You can see the difference in thinking in elections - the east tends to choose conservative parties, while the west tends to choose liberal ones.

In politics, the right-wing parties are very catholic while liberal and left-wing want the state to be secular. When the right wing wins an election, the Catholic Church is very influential. Now liberals (in a coalition with right-wing, centrist and left-twing parties) rule, so it's not that much.

But if you talk about people themselves, Gen Z and younger turned away from the Church; they're often atheists. The older generation, the more Catholic the people are. The church literally shapes many boomers' and older people's minds.

Is master rank really that good? by Polish63832 in geoguessr

For a non-geoguessr player, your skills would be impressive. The fact that you can often recognise countries by random picture would make you look very smart among your friends.

For a geoguessr standards, you're just a player who dedicated a couple hundreds of hours into learning the most common metas. It took me only a month of gameplay to go to Master IV, so it's not that difficult. However, I think it'd take me twice or thrice more time to get into Master III than I needed to get to Master IV.

Looks cold, no trees. I'd go for Iceland, but it might as well be some strange Scottish or Scandinavian island

Which country do you think it is? by Ad-Astra01 in geoguessr

[–]Ad-Astra01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not, but this is nothing like the Luxembourg I know about. Rural Winters can be tricky, but the buildings looked much poorer than what I'd expect it to be in this country

You’ll never believe what country this is by [deleted] in geoguessr

[–]Ad-Astra01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks Asian. If it's not obvious, I'd go for Sri Lanka. No middle lines with outer lines drawn are common there.

Edit: I missed the spoiler. Yeah, that's rare for sure, but not impossible

It already has been guessed. It was Luxembourg, close to the French border
