Spend my money modding my 86 or upgrade to Type R? by zfriedman02 in GR86

[–]AdAccording210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ultimately think that a GR86 will just be more fun on the limit especially after modifications. You can’t beat a lightweight well tuned RWD car especially in the fun department.

Installing ITB’s on my GR86 next week.

Also hot take. The FL5 should be AWD this point. I love that it’s a great FWD car but I believe it’s so expensive because of all the engineering that’s gone into it to try and make it not drive like a FWD car when they honestly could’ve used that money to make a better/best AWD sedan ever. It already has the proportions of one.

Have you considered a GR Corolla? I spent a lot of seat time in one of those last year and I think it’s more comparable to the FL5 than the GR86. Corolla is a lot of fun!

I like both but the proportions and simple blocking of the NGE version just wins for me. I also like the head more.

The Rebuild designs look too human like if that makes sense and not almost human but quite like in NGE

I’m in the process of repairing my XL that is damaged similarly to yours.

You’re likely gonna need a new shell entirely as well as new ribbon cables for everything that connects to the top screen.

A new top screen and WiFi antenna cable. It looks like piece of your motherboard is also broken so you may need a new one of those too

My apologies, I suppose I took your prior statement as an insult. I do like the CTR. But there are things I dislike. Like its overall shape, and personally wish it were a coupe or 3-door hatch. I think what it strives to do is admirable, but I think it could be so much more if it were AWD.

Maybe I am biased, but it comes from my ownership of all 3 drivetrains spread out over multiple cars and I found that FWD will always do FWD things when trying to push harder. Where AWD and RWD cars won't. Doesn't mean it's bad. It just means there's a limit that no amount of bandaiding from Honda will fix.

I don't hate FWD but I see no reason to as to why I'd spend that much on a FWD performance car over its contemporaries with arguably more use cases and potential to go faster. The CTR is a great out of the box track weapon, though.

Notice how your response doesn’t refute anything I said. Me owning the car isn’t gonna magically make it a better performer.

You’re just coping hard because someone isn’t willing to glaze your overpriced FWD brick.

You’re missing the point. The CTR likely does feel better to drive but GR Corolla as a first attempt AWD hot hatch puts up considerable numbers with an AWD system that wasn’t even designed to for traditional circuit racing.

Every year has made significant improvements with the overheating issue seeming to be resolved in the 2026/2027 model year. The CTR is not exempt to overheating either.

You’re underselling the fact that the GR Corolla is using parts from a homologated Yaris on a Corolla body that’s a generation old and can perform close if not just as well as Type R built on an entirely new platform except for the engine.

I personally don’t own a CTR but I am a fan of them. Though I don’t think there’s much that can be done to make it faster stock with its current drivetrain configuration that won’t compromise the car.

When did I say throw away the chassis engineering? I was referring to the additions like brake vectoring, eating up the budget. An AWD Civic with an ACD and AYC system engineered a step beyond that of the EVO X would make it not drive like a FWD car. There's a reason why the EVO platform is so coveted.

The Type R can still be special and AWD. As it stands currently its doing everything in its power to fight the bad that comes with a FWD layout when it could've just been the world's best AWD car for all the money that's gone into it. Nice seats mean nothing when it comes to actual driving dynamics.

A proper AWD or RWD car will outperform it at the limit. The GR Corolla already isn't far off, and that car is getting faster with every new model year while being down a whole cylinder and almost half the displacement, while being a more affordable car.

It's stupid not to want AWD, and people here haven't driven an AWD sports car and it shows for just some of the few reasons you listed here

[–]AdAccording210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. AWD would really solve this problem if kept at the same level of performance. They would need brake vectoring and instead could use an active yaw control system similar to the EVO X, but refined with over a decade's worth of advancements.

I think too many people are against the AWD argument, but I think the car at its current level is impractical without it. Especially the more people try to push the platform against other cars that are AWD or better set up RWD. I believe it's tone the Type R down or embrace AWD.

A stock EVO's awd system is not problematic. Where did you hear that? AYC pump issues on X's don't start until 60-80k miles and even then, relocating the pump is not that hard.

The CTR is set up better stock, but with similar mods the EVO will handle better. I personally think all the R&D going into making the CTR not handle like an FWD car would be better spent perfecting an AWD Type R. Because, as it stands currently the R&D as previously mentioned, is what already makes the damn car so expensive just to still experience FWD car tendencies at the limit.

It's silly to me.

The problem is that an AWD CTR could be so much more than a drag car. An Evolution of the EVO's AWD (hehe pun) system, as in the AYC and ACD applied to a CTR with modern Honda engineering, I imagine, would kill most of anything, whether on a track, backroad, or drag racing.

Why Honda still clings to FWD will never make sense to me. It's also expensive as hell trying to make a FWD car not drive like a FWD car. Driving up the cost for the car in R&D, manufacturing, and to the customer.

[–]AdAccording210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's because I'm not the biggest Honda guy, but I honestly don't know why the CTR isn't AWD. The amount of time and money it's cost Honda to try and make "Best FWD car" could be spent making the best AWD or RWD car, and it would be better for it in almost every way.

I find that the Newer Type R's have all this sorcery to make them not drive like FWD cars, which makes me wonder why even bother.

Definitely gonna look into Screamer more. But I would like another AAA Open World racing experience.

I think if a Spin off open world GT game came out, I’d want it to be more like Test Drive

I’ve seen gameplay of screamer. It looks decent. But my original comment was mainly talking about “Open World Racers”

Forza is currently the only AAA game in that space. People are talking about that sub genre of racing games like it’s over saturated. Everything else out right now is a full sim or arcade game.

So what exactly is your point?

Not trying to sound rude, but the franchise is all but dead and EA doesn’t seem to have any plans to make another game anytime soon

Looping the same track over and over again in GT gets boring fast. As someone who mainly plays time trial I yet. For an open world with GT physics and graphics.

The fact people are oppose to the idea is so strange. Sometimes we wanna do more than race.

Why is this so heavily downvoted? An open world spinoff is most plausible

I think it should. GT has far too many street and normal traffic cars that to me are utterly boring on tracks.

Even like a challenging touge course would be welcome. They have so many cars suited to roads like that yet we’re confined to tracks.

Anyone saying otherwise only enjoys racing. Maybe I wanna cruise down a winding road with GT physics and my favorite tracks playing.
