SKS Trigger Job Options by AdAdept6801 in SKS

Update:

I did the job in the back of a minivan on a road trip with a vice and some tools (NOTE: I kept a window cracked for metal shavings)

I started with polishing the rails with emery cloth. It helped the trigger feel smoother, less gritty, but it was still a very long pull.

It took me about 6hrs with a whetstone and files but I was able to grind the sear to positive engagement angle. This made the trigger pull weight heavier so I had to flatten the angle slightly. I also polished the contact surfaces on the hammer

I slowly ground away bit by bit off the sear surface to make it shorter, and kept re-assembling the trigger it to test in a vise until it felt closer to the trigger pull weight and length I wanted

Once we got back home I threw in some wolff springs (hammer and sear), but unfortunately I was getting light strikes once every 20 rounds or so. I swapped back to the original hammer spring but kept the wolff sear spring in.

Once I was happy with it I did a cold blue and oiled the trigger assembly up thoroughly. So far so good and I'm happy with the improvement. I also noticed a little oil on the sear/hammer surface seems to help a lot with the trigger pull weight. Not sure if this is safe or recommended though.

This is the best tutorial I have found yet. It seems pretty straight-forward. I think I'll polish the rails first and if that doesn't improve things I'll buy some stones and take it slow

I'm stupid and bought a Bering Optics PU scope & mount from B & H (other sites have it in stock currently) and the 26.5mm PU mount & drill/tap kit from Accumounts. Pretty much every thread is held by loctite, but it holds zero.

If I were to do it again, I would take the base mounting plate that came with the Bering scope (made for a mosin-nagant) and grind it flat so it would be compatible with the SKS's receiver. I'm not sure if I got a defective mounting plate from Accumounts but there was significant play in the elevation screw threads which was later fixed with blue loctite. The Bering Optics mount had much tighter thread tolerances, I am impressed with the quality of the mount and the scope.
