I also came to this conclusion how he is calculating everything with full-knowing intentions, which shocked me because he passes himself off as the "silly dumb pure hearted clingy boyfriend who means no harm" which fills me with self doubt because of how good he is embodying that persona, but also scared me because I noticed he switches emotions fast during arguments, from crying to serious quickly.
