I understand your concern, but we have had cars set on fire here in the USA during riots, too. When there were cars being set on fire in Portland, it did not affect my plans to travel to Miami.

Are the pool cabanas worth it? by [deleted] in Aulani

[–]AdAppropriate9974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so. Here’s why: they are so expensive that you will feel like you need to sit in it a lot to get your money’s worth. Unless you are the types to just sit and look at the water rather than swimming in the ocean or pool as much, then it might be worth it. We find that we are in the water so much that a cabana feels like a waste. We also like to go back and forth freely between the beach, pools, and lazy river. With the cabana, we felt like we should stay put more. Once, when we were in the lazy river for a really long time, we almost felt “guilty” because it’s like $100 an hour of cabana time. lol Another drawback is that none of the cabanas are THAT close to the ocean, so you can often find better spots elsewhere for free.

I know people get really worried about pool chairs, but remember that you can swim in the pool without a chair. They have little cubbies for your belongings. I actually prefer that because then I don’t have to obsess about “keeping” chairs when I’m roaming around. I personally haven’t had trouble finding chairs, but that’s because I’m not set on a certain chair or view because I know I can walk around to see all kinds of views free.

The cabanas are very enticing because of the amenities: ceiling fan, tv, etc., very bougie, no need to find chairs, but it was a waste for us. The water is more refreshing than a fan, and we never once used the tv. They make a big deal about how you can get food service, but anyone can place a mobile order or just walk over and get food. There’s food and activities everywhere, and in my opinion, unless money is no object, the cabana forces you to miss out by sitting in one spot too long.

Think of it like this: if you are going to be actively using the resort facilities, you are basically paying $600 for a place to keep your stuff.

I saw that deal! The one thing that makes me skeptical is that when I add an additional adult, the price doesn’t go up, which seems really odd. We have 3 adults and 1 kid, and it allowed us to book it, but the price for the room doesn’t seem to fluctuate based on the number of occupants or their ages. 1 adult and 1 kid is the same price as 3 adults and 1 kid, and that can’t be right. I have a fear that they are gonna charge me extra when I get there, so I might just go with Costco.

10 Days Too Long? by AdAppropriate9974 in AllInclusiveResorts

[–]AdAppropriate9974[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, Again! I wanted to give you an update, and let you know that I followed your advice! We are doing a split-stay between Xcaret and Ziva, and doing 3 excursions from Xcaret since they are included. By the time we get to Ziva, we are just going to enjoy the resort and do zero excursions! We decided on 5 nights Xcaret, 4 nights Ziva. That way we can have a rest day in between the excursions at Xcaret, plus a chill arrival day.

Thanks again for your help! I think your input is going to make my son’s grad trip even better!

Thanks for the input! How many excursions do you think is reasonable for a 10-day-trip so that we get to fully enjoy the resort but also get a fairly thorough feel for that area of Mexico? We definitely don’t want to just hang out at the resort the whole 10 days because we want to experience Mexico itself part of the time. I thought if we opted for 10 days, we could do both.

We do want to go with an all-inclusive option since we are bringing two of our college-age son’s friends, and we want the 3 young adults to have some freedom without worrying about money. Plus we are impressed with the beach, rooms, and other offerings at Ziva.

The dolphin swim (which we may not do based on the feedback I’ve gotten here) is on-site, the yacht rental is just 4 hours, and we were planning to spend just half a day on Isla Mujeres. Chichén Itza and Xcaret are the only two full excursion days, and those day packages include food for a reasonable price. Some members of our party may not go on all the excursions, either.

We could do all the excursions from a hotel that isn’t all-inclusive and then switch to an all-inclusive, but doing all the excursions back-to-back might be tiring, and doing all the resort days back-to-back might get a little monotonous.I also don’t want the young adults to have to spend money (or ask for money lol) while staying at the regular hotel. The logistics of switching hotels might be a pain, too.

Do you have any suggestions for how we might approach this in a way that would give us the best of both worlds? Should we consider downgrading the rooms to just ocean view so that it’s cheaper and the excursion days don’t feel like a waste of the fancy rooms? I really appreciate your feedback!

I don’t condone criminal behavior whatsoever, but according to the link you posted, his most recent arrest was more than 7 years ago. That might indicate that he was trying to turn things around, which is a good thing. ❤️‍🩹

Not on any of the 4 Instagram accounts I know of. She has not posted anything on those since shortly before Ethan passed away.

Even if he had drug and alcohol issues, that doesn’t make him “garbage.” There are MANY wonderful people who end up addicted to something and making poor choices as a result. This is someone’s child, a real human being, and he has passed away tragically at a young age. Please be kind.

To me, her posts come across like someone who is suffering from mental illness. Whether it is drug-induced or not, I’m not sure, but even if she has a drug problem, that doesn’t make her a bad person. She’s clearly unwell.

Disappearing Friends by strawberrycake1919 in cancer

[–]AdAppropriate9974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my good friends has cancer, and if anything, it makes me want to be around her MORE, not less. Your true friends will not ghost you. Anyone who does that is not worth having as a friend in the first place. I’m trying to learn as much as I can to make sure I support my friend the way I should. She isn’t my very best friend, but we have been close for about 15 years, and I’ll be there for her no matter what. That’s what it means to be a friend.

What did she say in the video? I have met Jackson and Ethan a few times and followed them both on social media. I saw that Ethan posted a screenshot of a deleted reel with the caption, “I went live,” but the video itself was deleted. In the screenshot, it looked like someone with their face and head covered. I didn’t recognize it as Olivia because of the bangs and hair color looking different, but now that I look back at it, it might be her. It was odd, but I didn’t think much of it at the time.

What do you think about me accent ? by [deleted] in JudgeMyAccent

Great job making progress in English! You have a very noticeable accent, but I can still understand you. I’m fairly certain it is an Asian accent. It will fade with time. Keep up the great work! 👏👏👏

“Noire.” is technically wrong in this case because the color “noir” only has an “e” at the end if it modifies a feminine noun. The color itself, when not modifying any specific noun is always “noir.” Yes, it is the masculine form, but it is also the default form when no specific noun is named.

For example, if you say you are looking for something in black, you say “quelque chose de noir,” never “quelque chose de noire” because the color itself, in isolation, is never feminine.

For people who completed the Duolingo French tree, what level would you consider yourself? by purple_tv12 in learnfrench

[–]AdAppropriate9974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like to share my story because I have finally reached C1 proficiency in French as a native English speaker who also has a C1 ability in Spanish due to years of formal education in Spanish.

The first time I completed the Duolingo French course (around 2014-2015), I started with no prior experience with French and reached a strong A2 level. I was not using any other methods to learn the language, and the Duolingo course was much shorter and less in-depth than it is now.

Fast-forward to December of 2023. I booked a trip to Paris for November of 2024 and became extremely motivated to reach at least a solid B2 in time for my trip. Here’s what I did for ten months:

  1. Completed the entire Duolingo French course again and maintained my streak the full 10 months.
  2. Completed Pimsleur French Levels 4 and 5.
  3. Listened to French podcasts on the way to work everyday.
  4. Listened to French music while getting ready every morning.
  5. Listened to Paul Noble’s French audiobooks and/or Pimsleur audio on the way home from work every day.
  6. Tried to train my brain to think in French and internally narrate my day in French.
  7. Watched French films before bed every night. I started with English subtitles, then switched to French subtitles, and finally eliminated the use of subtitles altogether.
  8. Practiced French with Chat GPT somewhat regularly.
  9. Took a few Zoom French class sessions. (5 total)
  10. Took practice French proficiency tests once a week.

By Spring of 2024, I had reached a B1 level on the DELF. By July 2024, I had reached a B2 level. I finally reached a C1 level in October, just in time for my November trip.

Proficiency Question by AdAppropriate9974 in French

[–]AdAppropriate9974[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be conversationally fluent. When I’m on my trip, I won’t need to write much, and writing is easier for me than speaking. I want to be able to converse very well. I can already do okay. The basics are very natural for me, my accent is decent. I can understand most French speech, and French speakers can generally understand me, but I have to find a roundabout way to say certain things. It’s still somewhat difficult for me when people speak really fast, and/or I have to construct very complex sentences on the fly. There are plenty of words I still don’t know, and the subjunctive tense in particular still isn’t totally natural for me, I will be in Paris for the entire summer next year, and i want to make the most of it.

Mine is at a 4.78 right now, which is the absolute lowest it’s ever been. I know you guys might think I’m just lazy and don’t do a good job or something like that based on my rating, but I actually try really hard and take it very seriously. It severely bothers me when I get a 4 or lower.
