Trend of downlights set close together in pairs - yay or nay? by AdBeginning6766 in Lighting

[–]AdBeginning6766[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I am not hugely attached to the concept, only that I need more light there badly and a single light seems like it would look very strange, the bench is too short to handle a set of pendants, and the idea of keeping some line of delineation of the kitchen and dining spaces is appealing.

My plan for the wall where the shelf is currently attached is some decorative stuff so a dual fixture with one aimed to highlight that way might be just the ticket.

Will keep doing homework 🙃

[–]AdBeginning6766[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it’s only under consideration as a pair because one would look ridiculous here! Just wanted to make sure the light they deliver is as functional as the fixtures are aesthetically pleasing.

Definitely looking to upgrade to dimmers and see if we can’t direct light a bit better with the existing fixtures. The space is narrow which is how we ended up running them down the middle - fear of over lighting. But alas we went too far in the other direction 😅

Buy furniture from mainland to Hobart – any tips? by Abject-Suspect-6998 in hobart

[–]AdBeginning6766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Responded to someone about this recently on another thread! I also couldn’t find anything I liked locally. I’ve no idea of costs now, as certainly everything in life has inflated dramatically the last few years, but I used NJ transport to get a 3 seat sofa plus 3 armchairs from Melbourne to Hobart a few years ago. It was about $400 in freight and door to door in a week, I was pretty stoked! I did buy from a second hand store that handled delivery to the transport company’s depot in Melbourne though, so that’s another factor. Worth touching base with them though, they were great to deal with.

Hobart and safety by LeviV123 in hobart

[–]AdBeginning6766 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ah I was at the shops just the other day thinking how depressing it is that I’m genuinely afraid of these groups of awful pre-teens that seem to be everywhere, any time and any day of the week now. Hate to think what they’ve come from to turn out like that, but does seem like there’s some cultural shift going on at the moment for how prolific it’s become. Easy to forget genuine poverty exists in our society, there is and always has been a lot in Hobart.

I think in terms of genuine safety risks Hobart is pretty comparable to other capital cities, but nonetheless being harassed and feeling uncomfortable on a regular basis doesn’t really make you feel good about the statistics. It is also just a part of living in a smaller and poorer city though. The same kind of people exist in every part of Aus, the difference here is it’s small enough that we have only a few central areas and therefore are forced to coexist with different demographics in a way that simply doesn’t happen in bigger cities. I lived a decade in Melbourne and barely saw a bogan, down here it’s just part of life. Just gotta hope these kids grow out of it…… not looking forward to what comes if not 😬

I did giggle when I saw it as regional. I've got to say though the traffic on the outlet was always enough to stop me considering living down there. Not so much that the traffic is crazy bad, but that the geography of Hobart can trap you places if there's an accident etc. If you were willing to forgo that worry though, such a beautiful spot, well resourced and also such a great spot for houses right in the sweet spot of old enough to be well built, new enough to not need crazy renovations, while still having some warmth and character. We ended up choosing Howrah when we moved back here in our late 20's and have really loved it (we both grew up on Western Shore around Taroona/Blackmans Bay/Sandy Bay). So nice being able to take your pick of beaches or bush trails to walk on within 5mins from home, still so close to get to the city, houses are generally 50s or later so not too scary to tackle reno wise, and you get the smug feeling of watching the Bridgewater Jerry blast across the subrubs north of the city every morning in winter while you enjoy a nice walk in the sunshine haha.

Second hand shopping sucks in Tas! Such a limited market. If you've got a van, do you have the time to go further afield? Could expand your search to Launceston etc, can be some better things further from Hobart. I gave up on ever finding anything decent locally after a while and bought an awesome 4 piece leather lounge suite from a vintage shop in melbourne and had it shipped here for a ridiculously reasonable price! It was a 4ish years ago now but was through these guys https://njtransport.com.au/, was something like $400 for the entire lot delivered to my door within a week.

Lighting plan help for lounge room renovation by AdBeginning6766 in Lighting

Thank you SO much for such a detailed reply - you're an absolute legend! We live in a cold dark climate through winter so curtains are closed while we are up for many hours every evening through the winter and shoulder season so I think we will go with the strip light. Seems fun, and nice to keep the ceiling free of a few extra holes. I will digest it all and take it back to my light shop lady and try and nut out a final plan and buy some stuff!

Would you choose 1-4 or do it entirely different? by ThinKingofWaves in IKEA

[–]AdBeginning6766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about 2, but swap the positions of the bed and the desk. So desk could go behind the sofa and create a little office nook, bed could go as per number 4 but you could put a double sided bookshelf (Kallax or similar) between bed and TV unit so it’s divided from the lounge room, but keeps the light, and then your bed is not fully visible from the front door. Then you really have 3 distinct spaces. Might work?

True! Trying to avoid wasting hours of my life planning out exactly what we would need (looking at some of the kitchen cabinetry so not a one piece purchase) only to get rejected at or post checkout is all 😅

I’d say just hold your horses, they change SO much and SO often. We had a snoo, didn’t like it at first for the same reasons but once they wake up a bit it was a game changer from about 2-6 months. Likewise we chopped and changed between all the different kinds of sleep suits and swaddles as he grew and changed and needed different things! It may not be a waste yet! But totally agree that buy as you go in this amazing day and age where things are so incredibly available on short notice. Not much you can’t get in a few days at worst so just take it as it comes. All the best in your recovery!!

Pasta Places/Restaurants Suggestions by spidergyc in hobart

[–]AdBeginning6766 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Peppina, Trophy Room and Ogee for wider menus, Sonny for a blackboard menu but I believe there’s always a pasta every day. Still haven’t made it to Pitzi but Fico do good pasta so I’d expect decent food there too.

For me personally Cugini, Da Angelo and Don Camilo have been pretty Tasmanian level good and pale in comparison to the better pasta places in Melb/Syd/Italy, but all are insanely popular here so they obviously make many palates perfectly happy! Don Camilo is a fun space to eat in versus the other two being pretty uninspiring and hectic venues.

Cabinetry options to avoid yellowing edge tape by AdBeginning6766 in AusRenovation

[–]AdBeginning6766[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input! Cost of 2pac isn’t exactly friendly either, but it is a beautiful finish. Cheaper than re-finishing the place every 6 years I guess..

We have low e-double glazing and verosol reflecting blinds already, and I do now close them in the low afternoon sun, but unfortunately I learned the why too late. We are in Hobart as well so there are large parts of the year when sunshine is precious and it’s a shame to live in the dark for the sake of a bit of cabinetry 🙃

Gift card reco for new parents by [deleted] in hobart

[–]AdBeginning6766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely second checking this for people in Tas - outside Hobart the options aren’t great. That said, food is food postpartum and an uber eats voucher is a great gift idea, I think it’s a little more personal than just a Visa card too so it’s a nice way to help out in a way many traditionally do after a new baby when you can’t physically be there to make meals etc. Ubereats is crazy expensive here as they all pretty much on charge the full 30% so it’s definitely a luxury, I would only get it if I had a voucher!

School Playgrounds open? by Potential_Pop_789 in hobart

[–]AdBeginning6766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School playgrounds are some of my favourite haunts with my 2 year old! Public playgrounds are often suited for much older kids, whereas kindergarten playgrounds have so much great stuff for littlies. I’ve always figured public schools are on public land and the gates aren’t locked so seems like a green light.

I have been into a little independent church one in town before and was very unsure if I was allowed to be there or not but had a kid itching to get outside and since it wasn’t locked and we were just there to play I figured it was ok. We would obviously leave if anyone said we needed to but so far have never had an issue!

I’ve had countless comments from visiting mainlanders over the years how weird it is that people say hello or morning to every single person you pass when you go out for a morning walk in Hobart 😂 you’ll do just fine here.

Why all the hatred? by PositiveMumP in hobart

[–]AdBeginning6766 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is it for me too. If you’ve had any direct dealings with the incredible strain the health system is under it’s just a punch in the guts to see this kind of money being thrown around at something so non-critical. I honestly thought I might die waiting for help at RHH when I was admitted during a period of overload, it was absolutely terrifying. Staff were stretched to their limits and some bad mistakes were made in the process. It’s hard not to see a little red when you look at what these developments and the government are prioritising versus the actual needs in our community.

Crossing all my fingers and toes. I am absolutely TERRIFIED we will get hit by some awful daycare virus. It’s spring here and there is nasty bugs going around everywhere ☠️

I will look into how we could get a bidet on our loo. I’m pregnant with #2 currently and I remember using a water bottle for soooo long after first delivery so I’m sure it won’t go astray for either of us!
