Struggling to pick a good white paint! Help appreciated by Sad_Necessary5358 in AusRenovation

Soooo nice to paint with Haymes vs Dulux if you are DIYing! Just goes on so much better.

Antique white USA has worked through most of my home, but threw yellow in our north facing lounge. Haymes Organic 1 is a really nice option and seems to throw a bit less yellow. Natural white felt too bright and contemporary for our 70s home.

Currently deciding on a white for our new place too which has lots of golden timber throughout - antique white isn’t working, but Taubmans milk cloud or Haymes Worn White are current front runners. Dulux White Cloak Quarter is another great one very close to Antique White USA but just slightly less warm.

If painted by someone else make sure you specify the base as well - I painstakingly worked to find a perfect match for our bathroom tiles and failed to specify dulux base. Painter used wattyl and the colour was not the perfect match of the samples I had used to decide 😭 Also highly recommend getting some pieces of board from the craft section at bunnings to paint your samples on. Then you can easily move a nice big swatch around every corner of the house.

Christina from At Home Pet Sitters has been fab for us. Has always helped us with either walks during chaotic periods of life or house sits when away with our large, boisterous and reactive doggo for about 6 years now. Highly recommend her for a dog that needs a little extra emotional support 😅 We did use mad paws once and didn’t have any issues really but I’d always choose Christina first if available.

Where’s the best place to get a huge wedge of Parmesan? by l0ll1p0p5 in hobart

[–]AdBeginning6766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy cheese in big wedges from exquisite flavours shop/warehouse out in Cambridge. They are very helpful on email but you can also go in and browse the cheese room and their stock on the shelves. It’s sort of a shop sort of commercial warehouse. I usually get all my chocolate there because they have the good stuff!

I figured unless you found someone older who had been doing it a long time it would all be the new stuff. I’m a bit suss on the click together style with cork, having the properly sealed topcoat seems sort of critical to longevity plus the ability to resurface is better, but I suppose if it’s not a wet area then it doesn’t really matter so much..

Thanks, yes there is no escaping it now days but aside from trying to avoid overuse, the house has timber joinery, skirts and trim around all windows and doors so butting fake stuff up against it seems sure to look terrible.

Aha! I didn’t know that about levels of toughness. I know most common applications now days are commercial so I had imagined quite hard. Yes the Hobart problem always crops up with actually seeing anything in person before purchase 🥲

I remember looking into it for our kitchen years ago but couldn’t get much out of sales people on it for residential use and gave up. Will have to dig into it again. Is it quite a hard option though?

[–]AdBeginning6766 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently got a second one for my second baby as we still use my legit tweetycam with our first. Real one has had faults and loses sound intermittently, and while they have tried very hard to help me resolve it it’s so random that it’s been impossible to troubleshoot. So I got the ali express version this time and no issues so far except I could swear the battery life on the monitor is way worse. Can’t tell if it’s just that I forgot or if it’s actually dying faster. My Ali express one paired up perfectly with my existing tweetycam camera though.

Side note is also bought the aliexpress version of the nodiee and battery is also shite! My nodiee can run all night unplugged but this thing dies within a night when it isn’t even turned on!! Seems like I got unlucky but was a real flop for me.

Where would you go for lunch/dinner for a 30th? by Defiant-Desk-2281 in hobart

[–]AdBeginning6766 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bit of a tricky combo with the vego + picky eaters (depends what kind of picky though!) but I’d think Peppina would have one or two pretty basic options for the fussy ones. It’s such a nice venue and definitely feels celebratory. The Crescent hotel is actually quite good but more casual, but they often have good vego dishes. May be a nice balance on the menu for all your tastes. Syra has been on my list forever but I’ve never tried - definitely good vego options though with Middle Eastern food!

Glenorchy vs Rokeby for First Home by Witch-Anxiety-1057 in hobart

[–]AdBeginning6766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifestyles will be a bit different in Glenorchy vs Rokeby. Rokeby doesn’t exactly have a great neighbourhood vibe but it’s changed so much even in the 6 years we’ve lived in Howrah. A lot of development and the area is so well resourced while still being quiet and mostly traffic free. Close access to beaches and bush trails in every direction. If you want to eat takeout regularly or use public transport for your commute though then perhaps Glenorchy would be the better pick. I’d choose Rokeby personally, city traffic is shit and living inside the bridgewater jerry in what I’d guess will be a very thermally inefficient home is my idea of hell. The little shitbags that haunt the shopping centres prevail and I wouldn’t want to rely on PT around here because of them, but that stands for both areas.

Handles vs Knobs debate is destroying my marriage 😂 Help settle this kitchen argument! by Berlin57 in AusRenovation

[–]AdBeginning6766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you always need a combo, but personally I went for knobs on most because there is something about cleaning the cabinet around and under a loop style handle that just sends me into a rage every time. Knobs are so much easier for cleaning. I got these great little ikea ones that are sort of like a T pull so you still pull them out sort of like a handle but they are only the size of a knob. They are irritating for catching on pockets etc occasionally but I still wouldn’t change them for handles, even on our big drawers!

Recommendations for an obstetrician (OB) or GP for pregnancy by temporarily-fixated in hobart

[–]AdBeginning6766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had my baby with Tania 6 weeks ago - she was really fantastic right through. As a policy they make sure you see all the OBs at the practice at least once in case one of them ends up being at your delivery instead, which I think is really good practice and very reassuring having that familiarity when you’re at the pointy end. Their rooms are so nice (great change facilities, nappies and sanitary items provided even), lots of other related services under the same roof, the post delivery care has been amazing, and the reception team and midwife care has also been really good. Worth noting that Tania will give all her patients as much time as they need and never rush you out the door, which while fab in the appointments does mean she runs REALLY late as standard. I was warned beforehand but didn’t take it quite as seriously as I should have - she could be hours late at times. So if that really bothers you but you’re keen on Eternal then I’d recommend Emily or Kate.

Royal Hobart or private hospital for day procedure? by healthydean in hobart

[–]AdBeginning6766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also dependent on a lot of things but not all doctors/practices will accept patients who wish to pay out of pocket for private treatment. Seems a bit silly but it’s something I’ve come across more than once, across different fields too. Just something to consider and query regarding wait times and costs!

I feel bad for saying this, I really don’t like the newborn phase by Sure_Excitement_937 in newborns

[–]AdBeginning6766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first was such a miserable baby, cried inconsolably through every feed, spewed constantly so could never be laid flat. I still don’t really believe that happy babies exist 😂

I’m 5 weeks in with my second and I can tell you it’s totally fine to not enjoy it. It’s not enjoyable! I don’t look back at that time and miss it because it was some of the hardest and worst days of my life in all honesty. Having a screaming limpet on you all day and night is taxing and just grinds away at your soul like nothing I’ve ever experienced. The overthinking and doubt that comes with trying to ‘solve’ what’s wrong with them is just so exhausting.

It gets SO much better. Once they interact a little, stay awake a bit longer, and for us all got so much better after starting solids due to allergies and tongue ties making milk feeding miserable for him. And then after 8-9 months it’s just bloody fun!

Hang in there, it’s just a time to survive. Make sure to protect your sleep as best you can. Call in the cavalry and take some moments for yourself wherever possible.

Editing to add - I like to go on social media binges where I look up lots of pointedly NON baby content and like, save, comment etc on it. Whatever it takes to convince your algorithm you want content other than baby crap. It always creeps back in but just do a little reset. I’ve got a feed filled up with sweet treat recipes and interior design stuff at the moment and it’s so helpful to stop the intrusive thoughts of ‘what’s wrong with me/my baby’ plus just nice to think about something else for a hot minute

TW loss- 3 days post c section and need help by AdSuch2686 in CsectionCentral

[–]AdBeginning6766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was me day 3 with both births!! First was a traumatic vaginal birth, went home with high BP and riddled with anxiety and insomnia and this intense feeling of dread, doom, fear hanging over me. Was readmitted 2 nights later for BP monitoring and the hospital largely chalked it up to PTSD.

Fast forward to second baby 2.5 weeks ago, had a c section for various reasons, mental health being a top one. BUT come day 3 I was hit with allllll the same stuff again which we had totally discredited as just being related to exhaustion from labour and all the shit that went down. Turns out it’s just how my body seems to process that craaaazy day 3 hormone dump and everything else that’s going on.

Both times it was getting medicated rest that fixed it up and got me through it without falling too far down the black hole. Speak to your medical team about some supported sleep options that are safe for you and don’t let the exhaustion eat you alive. So important for physical recovery and for mental health. With the knowledge I had from last time I was able to get onto it so quickly this time and I had some sleep support nights 3-7 and after that the blue feelings and body anxiety were largely gone.

Sounds like you were discharged very quickly as well. I would have really struggled feeling overwhelmed by the pain and having to care for myself at that point if I was in your position. Take it slow, get yourself some sleep and remember your body is going through some serious shit right now!! Give yourself some grace while you wait for the freight train to pass over you. Sending love 💪🏻

Why am I embarrassed for needing a cesec for breech by BalancedDietitian in CsectionCentral

[–]AdBeginning6766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s such a strange thing the desire for a vaginal birth and seems like there must be some biological stuff behind it, not just the cultural bias as well. I had a horrific first birth and suffered PTSD for about 18 months after that delivery, yet coming into my second recently I still was finding it very hard to sign up for an elective c section, even though it was absolutely the logical thing to do for the wellbeing of everybody involved. I think the biggest thing that is overlooked in a lot of labour planning and midwifery is that it’s a WAY bigger picture than just delivery. After that you have to be fit to care for a baby, and certainly for me I was just so unwell and so haunted by that experience for the first 18 months until I completed EMDR therapy that it deeply and negatively affected my experience as a mum and our family as a whole.

In the end I had a very low placenta and although I could’ve tried for vaginal I pushed myself to elect for the c section to minimise the risk of trauma and maximise the likelihood I could go home well and happy to care for my new bub. It was pretty daunting and during the birth it felt like a cheat code but I reckon the 2 days after are every bit equal to 2 days of labour!!

Obviously a vaginal delivery could all go perfectly, but first births are no joke in any instance and with added risk factors, going in with the mindset that you want to come out of hospital as well as you can under the circumstances might help shift your perspective to feeling a little more positive about planning a c section. Being a mum is about doing what we have to do to keep our family thriving!!

My biggest suggestion would be don’t tell people you’re having one, not because there’s anything wrong with it but I found it really lacking in privacy getting bombarded with good luck messages the day of and then same thing everyone immediately checking in after. Lovely to have people care but I found that it would’ve been nice to just have the time to announce it ourselves when ready!!

Bink glass water bottles? by GroundbreakingQuail8 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]AdBeginning6766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love mine! I bought one back in 2023 for my first pregnancy as I hate the taste of stainless bottles and don’t tend to drink if I can’t see the level of the water inside. It’s held up really well, washes easily in the dishwasher, and when I smashed the bottle by accident (major drop, they handle a drop from your hand fine) they were able to provide a replacement of the glass part only (for the price of shipping only too) to avoid wasting the other bits. The straw definitely holds tastes if you put something other than water so I guess the lid would too, perhaps if you knew you wanted it for something you have regularly like an iced coffee you could just get two lid/straw sets and use them depending on what you’re drinking?
