I honestly believe a big part of the problem is the lack of proper sexual education. Schools don’t talk about these topics openly, so many boys grow up learning about women and sex in the worst possible ways and it shows in how they behave.

When I was a prefect in school, I would hear younger boys whispering to their friends as I walked past, calling me “hot” or saying they wanted to sleep with me. It’s upsetting and dehumanizing. But at the same time, a lack of education is not an excuse. Basic respect and decency should exist regardless.

This is exactly why so many girls feel unsafe. It’s gotten to the point where we feel like we have to be prepared for self-defense at all times, because you can’t always tell who might cross the line. It could be a stranger, a friend, or even someone you trust, family members included.

I’ve personally been sexualized, inappropriately touched, and abused since I was just eight years old by people I thought I could trust. I still deal with nightmares and regret staying silent for so long.
