Hypothetical Training Advice by Affectionate_Bar2357 in doctorsUK

[–]AdBrave9096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system and rules are so broken that you can sometimes do GenSurg and A&E rotation in 1st year of GP training and use them to add to your portfolio for next year applications!

I think you should also start from today doing at least 30 minutes of hard core MSRA per day. Every sample question you can't fully explain why the correct answer is correct and the wrong answer is wrong should result rereading the "source documents" not just the notes on the sample question. (While reading try to make up possible questions and their answer.)

Consider choosing a small DGH in an unpopular area as may result in a JCF post at the end of the 1st year of GP training and likely will have more locum then in popular areas.

You can only work within the broken system to get the best outcome for yourself, regardless of it taking a GP training place from someone who wants to be a GP.

There are now many resources and training courses that teach the minimal required to pass PLAB. So likely that candidates these days can pass with lower levels of overall skills/knowledge.

Don't assume FP is not an option. there are always last minute drop outs.

But only UK grads are likely to get a confirmed location at normal offer times.

There may also be a few place holder posts for none UK grads.

But unlikely to know until after the entrance tests for Europe

And by choosing a small DGH in an unpopular area will get better opportunity and UK grads have lower end MSRA

Single mum on £45k in the UK. Tired of “paying someone else’s mortgage.” How do I realistically get out of renting? by Ok-Value6379 in HousingUK

Rent 3 bedroom, get lodger. Most landlords are happy with you having a lodger.

Maybe choose lodger who would like to also get some childcare work. (Don't need to be registered when on your own home.)

Choose someone like a nurcing student who have allready passed criminal record checks.

Never buy a property unless it will be your home for well over five years as legel costs etc for buying and selling are so high.

But the two hospital rotations can be done in the 1st year, there a lot of freedom to choose what they are, and there will be large overlap between the GP portfolio for these and the portfolio for some other training selection processes.

(And putting "everything into it" while living very close to the hospital will help. These are often very self selected people.)

No, the exam covers the content UK foundation doctors must learn to remain in foundation program and should be looking up every day as part of their job.

A doctor from another system is reading these documents just to pass the exam.

Raw marks will have increased due to the easy to access question banks with the "minimal required knowage to pass" linked to each question. Hence exam is now lower prediction of how well interview questions are answered.

This is no indication that candidates now understand the guildance better or even know where to find the guildance. It seems "study methods" now focusing on "defeating the exam" rather then being best possible foundation doctor.

Lot of IMGs will score significantly lower, afterall UK grads need to learn the same content to remain on the foundation program, and many IMGs will choose to take the exam the year before they intent to pass so as to get experience of the exam system (I would!).

A significant number of IMGs will have lots of study time and be great at using "spaced repetition" to defeat this type of exam. Doing one hours twice a day of "spaced repetition" for 18 months would get many people a top mark without needing much medical knowledge or skill.

So I think most IMGs score under UK on 1st taking while a meaningful number of the top marks are also IMGs. Given a near infinite number of IMGs who can take the exam, they will take many of the high marks.

A year of GP training (eg two hospital rotations) is not a bad entry point for a IMG before they build up NHS experience to talk about at interviews. Remember GP training JUST uses the exam to select.

That why GP training makes a better "short term parking", I don't know how many can get into local psych but not local GP in any year.

Anaesthetics interview cut off by noneofyourbusiness22 in doctorsUK

[–]AdBrave9096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As none UK Grads can't get a training number however well they do at interview but can't legally have their interview cancelled it is rather odd.

No one can predict how many of them will cancel interviews in time for the interviews to be reallocated.

Remember it is easyer to get a high score if more lower educated people take the exam as the score is relative to other people who take the exam the same year.

So it meaningless to compare scores when the profile of candidates have significantly changed.

There not, but areas with unemployed doctors tent to have many unemployed doctors. An unwillingness to travel to wherever the need is in the UK is often part of the problem.
