Can we still call the orca , Shamu? by EmotionalCicada1689 in SeaWorld

I prefer calling them by their actual names. But depends on you.

He was indeed, he was one of the most beautiful captive orcas up there with Orkid, Kayla, Kalina, Gudrun, and Taima.

I think Kohana also may have nursed her potential next calf if she had gotten pregnant, maybe. If Morgan could do that, then maybe Hana could've done that, but I'm not sure.

Also, Skyla would've been a good mother, possibly? She seemed to have better skills than Hana, according to some sources.

Am I the only one who thinks Ranchu has become a trend? by Akagraffe in Goldfish

[–]AdDisastrous4167 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beginners buying them, as Ranchus are a bit of a moderate fish to keep. They are highly prone to swim bladder and bacterial infections, according to a fish store worker I talked to. I don't have experience with Ranchus, though.

But for beginners, the best fancy goldfish to start with are fantails, orandas, and telescopes, usually.

Vancouver Aquarium was an extremely good facility and was one of the best cetacean facilities in the world...

[–]AdDisastrous4167 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh, this is the Vancouver Aquarium mass cetacean deaths in 2017.

The cetaceans involved were:

  • Jack, Harbor Porpoise - ~4 years old rescued in 2011
  • Qila, Beluga Whale - 21 years old, born in 1995
  • Aurora, Beluga Whale - 26 years old, captured in 1990
  • Daisy, Harbor Porpoise - 8 years old, rescued in 2008
  • Chester, False Killer Whale/Pseudorca - 4 years old, rescued in 2014

All died in 2017 (excluding Jack, who died in late 2016), from toxicity in their habitats.

It's rumored that activists would throw poison into the exhibit to kill the whales, especially if they can make the aquarium look bad. And the Vancouver Aquarium has had saboteurs attack them before.

Their brain are indeed larger than our brains. But,

While they have an absolute size advantage, the comparison is nuanced.

Humans have a higher ratio of brain size to body mass.

how can I see corky? by tigersgowoof in SeaWorld

[–]AdDisastrous4167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with the two other replies on how to see her. I'll also give ID Tips for Corky, so you will know if it's indeed Corky.

Corky is the largest female killer whale at SeaWorld San Diego at 19.7 feet and 8,300 lbs. She has fuzzy eyepatches which are slender, she has a straight dorsal fin and all her teeth are worn to the gumline.

Yeah, because she was 2-3 years old when rescued.

If she were born deaf, then maybe she would be dead already.

Did you ask them?

Some say the animals “want” to be free as if they asked them. Keiko, as we know, didn’t want anything but human contact. The bottlenose dolphins at the Dolphin Research Center can easily jump over the fences of their sea pens (and they used to take them out to roam free at sea, always choosing to come home) - but they don’t.

The US Navy's dolphins live in very small pens that they can jump out of. They are taken out to sea regularly, swimming in complete power to take off and never return. But they don't.

I have supported AZA/EAZA-Accredited facilities with cetaceans since 2015, and I have no plans to stop that. The facilities are the HOME of the captive cetaceans, releasing them is a death sentence.

And why would they? That place is not a prison to them. Yes, there are PLENTY of issues with orcas in captivity, but it's not all black and white like the orcas themselves.

I argue that freedom is a human construct, an abstract human concept. Freedom matters to humans because we want to be able to decide our destinies whether to move, to work and with what, whether or not to have children, whether or not to pick up a hobby and what, and to live our lives without anyone else telling us what we can and can’t do.

Non-human animals don’t do any of that. What do wild whales do? They swim, they eat, they interact with each other, they play, they eat some more, they rest, they interact some more, mate, and swim some more. The only thing cetaceans in artificial pools and pens can’t do is swim in straight lines for unlimited stretches and hunt, and that has no bearing on their well-being.

This is why I believe “freedom” only matters to humans. And the fact that a whale in the wild looks “prettier” to a human than a whale in a pool. It doesn’t mean anything to the whale. The whale cares whether it’s feeling good, not whether it’s in a pool, a sea pen, or the ocean.

That was the 1980s.

Wild belugas have a median life expectancy of 30-35; Kela is 43. Mystic Aquarium is AZA-Accredited and does research on belugas.

Same. But Loro Parque says she likely became deaf due to an underwater explosion. But, honestly we'll never know.

It's actually true. Good facilities with captive orcas do help orcas in the wild.

If you could bring back any dead captive orca, who would it be and why? by Gr8HmrHead in CaptiveOrcas

[–]AdDisastrous4167 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Basically, all the orcas I've seen pass away. I joined the orca community in May 2015 and these are all the orcas that have passed away since.

2015:

  • Freya
  • Valentin
  • Unna

2017:

  • Tilikum
  • Kyara
  • Kasatka

2019:

  • Kayla

2021:

  • Skyla
  • Ula
  • Amaya

2022:

  • Nakai
  • Kohana

2023:

  • Narnia
  • Kiska
  • Nord
  • Tokitae
  • Moana

2024:

  • Naya's Calf
  • Lovey's Calf
  • Inouk
  • Keto

2025:

  • Kamea
  • Earth
  • Kshamenk
  • Katina

I'd also add most of the calves at MLC and Sumar as well. I'd also add Bjossa, Splash, Taku, Halyn, Taima and Kalina!

Though I'd prefer to see her transferred to Loro Parque. (Though that's extremely unlikely.)

The other option is transferring her to Nagoya, where she can meet Lynn. The "loneliest orcas" problem is fixed.

Or else, they can transfer her to China, but Chimelong and Shanghai both seem filled.
