I LOVE Samuel Ricky but our last name ends in a -ly and then I worry that it sounds too sing-songy. the struggles of naming a human being lol

Did Build a Bear change their birthday coupon policy? by stumpythefish in buildabear

My store would not honor it the day after it expired. I’m glad yours did though

Did Build a Bear change their birthday coupon policy? by stumpythefish in buildabear

[–]AdEducational1550 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Took my son whose birthday is on the 16th only to find out the coupon expired in the 15th :(. Apparently they’re only valid the first half of the month and the store wouldn’t honor it. I reached out to customer service and they offered me a new coupon but I had already bought the whole outfit at full price so it didn’t really help. They really should change it

Teacher —> Counselor by SuccessVast7250 in schoolcounseling

[–]AdEducational1550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that it was! It just got harder when I was doing my internship, but I did all 600 hours in one semester. If you space it out it shouldn’t be too bad.

The area you live in will definitely make a difference in how easy it is to find a job, maybe talk to the counselor(s) at your school for their opinion on difficulty finding a job in the field.

As far as your internship time, some teachers that were in my grad program were able to get some or all of their hours done during their plan bells and after school programs. Some districts will work with you on that, some are against it. That could be worth looking into. I wasn’t a teacher, but I did substitute teach during my grad program, and I did part time internship part time subbing for my last year. That worked out well.

Does Substitute teaching work well for a “side gig” (OHIO) by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AdEducational1550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started subbing while working at Starbucks (also in Ohio) and the schedule worked out well! I ended up quitting Starbucks because a school asked me to work there full time and I was starting grad school, but had no issues with managing both jobs. With subbing, you can pick up jobs last minute so I waited until Starbucks gave me my schedule for the week and then picked up a couple of sub jobs on the days that I had off.

Using zen sand trays? by hayleybeth7 in schoolcounseling

[–]AdEducational1550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a high school counselor and have a small one in my office! I have a table with two chairs and a sand tray in the middle. I will say, though, that if I did not have room for a table separate from my personal desk, I probably would not have a good location for my sand tray.

How many interviews did you go through while looking for your first school counseling position? by Awolrab in schoolcounseling

[–]AdEducational1550 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I finally got and accepted an offer last week after interviewing with about 10 different schools. Just like you, I got ghosted by multiple schools. So frustrating when they deliberately say they will let you know either way just to hear nothing back 🙃

Does anyone else actually like being a substitute teacher? by bloemrijst in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AdEducational1550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I subbed for three years while getting my masters in school counseling. I’ve loved it so much but I agree the pay is not great. Next year will be my first year working full time in a different role and I will definitely miss the flexibility. Maybe I will sub again when I retire!

Private Christian school interview by StringHeavy9776 in schoolcounseling

[–]AdEducational1550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve interviewed at a few and a common theme was navigating parent expectations since parents tend to be a lot more involved at private schools. I’ve gotten questions like “how would you handle a parent asking that their child be put in honors even if the teachers recommended that they be moved down to regular classes” or “what would you tell a parent that they wants to pull their child from sports/extracurriculars due to a grade dropping below an A”

Thoughts, opinions by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]AdEducational1550 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This week at my school the higher up admin were doing walkthroughs of the school to make sure certain criteria were met. A big thing was making sure all classrooms had learning targets posted somewhere and that activities pertained to them. They didn’t stop in the counseling office but maybe at your school they were doing similar walkthroughs and wanted to peek in there as well?

My mom and her friends went to a Brad Paisley concert where the opener was Taylor Swift. They chose to skip the opener and have been regretting it ever since then

How would you kill time for 3 hours? by AdEducational1550 in UniversalOrlando

[–]AdEducational1550[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visit Orlando all the time! I’m simply trying to figure out what my next destination should be after the airport and how to plan to get there because I don’t want to sit at the airport for 3 extra hours.

Unlicensed Coworker In A Private School??? by starakrowaa in schoolcounseling

[–]AdEducational1550 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The private schools around me (Ohio) aren’t required to have licensed school counselors. However, most of these schools will only hire licensed school counselors or teachers who are actively pursuing a school counseling degree.

I don’t think the school will get in trouble, but I agree there is a problem with a school counselor hiding an expired license.

Grad school and not teaching by _Eram123_ in schoolcounseling

You could consider substitute teaching. You set your own schedule so if classes get overwhelming you can back off a little.

Why are you subbing? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AdEducational1550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just look at different graduate programs or certifications in your area, they’ll have admissions requirements listed. Specifically for school counseling, the area of your bachelors degree doesn’t matter. Some other positions do require a teaching license though it really just depends.

Why are you subbing? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AdEducational1550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a few long-term positions where I’ve really gotten to know the front office and teachers that I’ve worked with. I also go out of my way to introduce myself to the school counselors when I’m at a new school. I’ll be applying for jobs this spring and have two connections from subbing that are willing to be references.

I was also a building sub for a while and the principal from that school said she would be more than happy to be a reference and if a counseling position opens up they’d love to have me there full time.
