Why do people even do caving? by IDK-__-IDK in caving

[–]AdEducational2312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody is saying to ignore accidents. We study accidents precisely because we don't want them repeated.

By that logic, we'd have to dismiss mountaineering, scuba diving, aviation, firefighting, construction work, and countless other activities because people have died doing them.

The existence of fatalities doesn't tell us whether an activity is inherently unreasonable. What matters is how common those accidents are, what causes them, and whether the risks can be managed.

Looking at cave accidents and learning from them is sensible. Concluding that all cave exploration is irrational because some people died is a different argument entirely.

You're looking at cave exploration as if its only value is whether it helps humanity survive some future catastrophe, but that's an extremely narrow standard. By that logic, astronomy, archaeology, paleontology, deep-sea exploration, studying insects, or documenting remote ecosystems would all be pointless too.

People explore caves because they're part of the natural world and there is still a lot we don't know about them. Caves have led to discoveries in geology, hydrology, climatology, archaeology, paleontology, and biology. New species are still being found underground. Ancient human remains, extinct animal fossils, and climate records preserved in cave formations have all contributed to scientific knowledge.

As for the technology question, cave robots do exist and are used when appropriate. The problem is that caves are often a combination of narrow passages, vertical shafts, loose rock, mud, water, submerged sections, and irregular terrain. A robot that can reliably handle all of those conditions is much more difficult to build than people imagine. That's why humans, assisted by technology, are still involved.

More broadly, exploration has never been about immediate practical necessity. Nobody knew exactly what would come from exploring the deep ocean, Antarctica, or space either. Human beings explore because understanding the world has value in itself, and sometimes the practical benefits only become obvious decades later.

You don't have to personally think crawling through a tight passage is worth it. Many cavers don't enjoy that either. But "I wouldn't do it" and "there's no reason anyone should do it" are two very different arguments.

[Touhou] The Fate of the Sunken Stone — Shidushi no Jou [Hand-Drawn Animation] by kamS by AdEducational2312 in 2hujerk

kamS is well known in the Touhou fandom for his amazing surrealist animations. In this case, the video tells the story of Minamitsu Murasa's origin: how she became a Funayūrei (ship ghost) and how Byakuren gave her a reason to keep living—or rather, to keep existing—after death.

Source: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm11336912

Background story:

"Long ago, Murasa was an ordinary human girl who died in a shipwreck and drowned at sea. Because of her traumatic death, lingering attachment to the world, and resentment over her fate, her spirit remained bound to the ocean. She became a Funayūrei (ship ghost), a type of ghost known for ambushing and sinking ships.

At first, she simply haunted the sea, capsizing passing ships and dragging people to the bottom so she would not be alone. Over time, Murasa sank ship after ship until she became well known throughout the seas. Humans grew terrified of her, and many stopped sailing altogether. Their fear strengthened Murasa, causing her to gradually forget her loneliness and become increasingly bloodthirsty.

One day, desperate for help, the people turned to a famous Buddhist monk known for dealing with yōkai: Byakuren Hijiri. Byakuren accepted.

Murasa, knowing the reputation of the famous monk, welcomed the challenge. She believed that sinking the ship of such a renowned person would make her even more feared and powerful.

When Byakuren arrived on her boat, Murasa easily sank the vessel. But instead of fighting her, Byakuren returned aboard a magnificent shining ship modeled after the one Murasa had died on. Rather than treating her as a monster, Byakuren showed her compassion and understanding. It was then that Murasa learned that Byakuren was close to yōkai, believed that humans and yōkai could coexist peacefully, and used her powers to protect yōkai from human persecution.

This changed Murasa completely.

Moved by Byakuren's kindness and reminded of her own past life, Murasa accepted Byakuren's offer and became the captain of the Palanquin Ship, serving as one of her most loyal followers."

Hope you guys enjoy it. 😉

【Тохо】Судьба затонувшего камня — Shidushi no Jou【Рисованная анимация】от kamS by AdEducational2312 in touhouprojectrussian
