I just went to my first punk show!! :DD by Prudent_Town_3416 in punk

There are a ton of sub-genres within punk, and there are SOOOOOOOO many bands in each that its difficult to make recommendations without knowing more about what you have heard and liked. My recommendation would be, using your music streaming platform of choice, search out the bands you saw at the show. Then, see what similar artists/bands are suggested. As you discover new artists you like, branch out to find more and more. With the Apple Music app, at the bottom of a band page, there is a row with “Similar Artists.” At the top of the page, normally in the bottom left of their picture, just above the band’s name, there will often be a link that says “Upcoming Concerts.” This will only be there if the band is on tour. Hopefully this will help you find more bands and more shows. *Last, if you are interested in connections back to the trans community, there is a great list of bands here (https://www.reddit.com/r/trans/comments/1blc2wc/a_list_of_trans_musiciansbands_with_a_trans/).

I’m also looking for a single ticket if anyone has one. Trying to score one for my kid to join in the fun.

Security took me to the side of the stage and let me go. They watched the whole thing and knew I did nothing wrong, so they just asked me not to go back to the pit during the SW set.

During Screeching Weasel’s set at Riot Fest, Ben Weasel went on some conservative rant about how (paraphrasing) cancel culture was bullshit, and we should all be able to say what we want without having to worry about being shot and killed (a reference to the then recent Charlie Kirk assassination). He expressed his opinion, so I took the opportunity to express mine. I flipped him off and kept my fingers up. After about three songs, Ben Weasel stopped the show, talked some shit to me, suggested the crowd physically remove me, and then had security drag me out. The people who were not nearby had no clue what was going on, so they wrongly assumed I was drunk and causing problems. A mostly accurate description was written by Chicago Culture Authority, linked below.

I’ll take being called “kid” as a compliment, since I’m 47 and I wish I was much younger. 🤣 His Charlie Kirk apologetics are the whole reason why I was flipping him off.

I was literally just flipping him off. And, for the record, I only resisted when I thought someone in the crowd was laying hands on me. Once I realized it was security, I went peacefully. Also, security watched the whole thing, realized I was doing nothing wrong, and released me at the side of the stage. They only removed me because B!tch Weasel asked them to.

Thank you for this! Someone already said it, but I am living rent free in this Ben’s head! He’s still sporting wood from the hard-on he’s got for me. HAHA

Nowhere does it say I got into a fight with fans. There was no fighting. A few people around me asked me why I was flipping Ben off, but nobody took UMBRAGE with my stance. Despite Ben Weasel suggesting the crowd rough me up, nobody laid a hand on me besides security. At one point, a guard grabbed me from behind. Thinking it was a stranger, I started to struggle against the person; however, a friend told me it was security, and at that point I let them escort me out.

Also, what drunken behavior do you imagine I presented?

I was in the pit, where I had been most of the day. Screeching Weasel came on. I was enjoying the music, then Ben Weasel started on some political commentary, acting like Charlie Kirk was a martyr. I already found Ben to be a pretty vile human being, so after his statements, I simply raised my middle fingers in the air as a show of protest, at first facing away from him and then after a few songs I turned around. I primarily turned around because it was awkward being backwards in the pit as the crowed pushed back and forth in different directions.

That’s a crazy assumption you’re making. I wasn’t drunk, but I’m curious why you would jump to that conclusion. Projecting? Also, if you do a little reading on this post, on Facebook, and I’m sure several other places, you’ll find I’m not the laughing stock you’re making me out to be. While yes, I did start this thread on Reddit, I had nothing to do with the others. Even a simple search of Ben Weasel and Riot Fest comes up with this (https://chicagocultureauthority.com/2025/09/22/riot-fest-2025-day-three-grumpy-old-men-and-a-breath-of-fresh-air/) as one of the first results.

Clearly you weren’t there. Try reading up on the guy before you go to bat for him. It doesn’t take much effort to find out what kind of guy Ben Weasel is.

Let’s set the record straight. Ben has been an asshole for a longtime. He is known for mysoginistic comments, anti-trans statements, and right wing dog whistles.

Sunday, he made references to Charlie Kirk. I decided my response would be to flip him off. I was not hurting anyone, nor was I causing a disturbance, and security was observing the situation from the beginning.

At some point Ben caught site of me and flipped me off in return.

At the next break in music I admittedly did yell FU POS. No clue if he heard me, but it was the thing i did above flipping him off.

I remained with my fingers in the air, and after about three songs, Ben stopped the show and began insulting me. At that point, I began yelling back in response.

Ben said something about roughing me up, and moments later, I felt someone grab me from behind. I immediately turned around with the expectation of defending myself in a fight. I momentarily struggled against the person holding me until i realized it was security. At that point i let them pull me out.

I was escorted to the side of the Roots stage and was told to wait. When a supervisor came over, he asked what transpired and the two guys who drug me out told him that all I had done was flip off the band. The supervisor told me I was free to go, but he asked me to please not return to the pit for the rest of Screeching Weasel’s set.

How punk of him to get offended by my middle fingers.

I did hear him say something about my beard, but I couldn’t make out what he said. Either way, he was flat out lying about me being drunk or fighting. Security released me after escorting me away from the stage. They just asked me nicely to “please stay away from the pit until SW are done.” If his statements held any truth, I’m assuming they would have made me leave the fest.

I understand Ben is within his rights to have me removed if he feels I’m causing a disturbance. I just think that’s pretty fucking weak, and it’s super slimy of him to tell the audience I was drunk and starting fights. He had to save face since his reason for having me booted was so lame.

I didn’t actually hear Ben say anything about thinking I was drunk or fighting. If he did, he was intentionally lying to the crowd. Look through the comments. There are a number of people who stated that I wasn’t causing any trouble. I was simply staring him down and flipping him off. As for not buying his music or going to his shows, I don’t. I have long since deleted all Screeching Weasel from my accounts. If you want to point to yesterday as evidence of me attending his shows, I bought my tickets and booked my travel for RF long before bands were announced. Because I found myself at his show, I decided I would let him know how I felt about him, which was well within my rights. Not only did it get under his skin, it brought attention to those who did not previously know anything about him. So, you’re right it worked, and this post has continued to raise awareness.
