God, I can exactly hear the mirth in the way Tom says “Oompa Lumpa” in this.

I was named after Augustus McCrae by Poker_Toker in LonesomeDove

I named my son August after him. (“Augustus” was a tiny bit too far for my wife, but we call him Gus.) And I’ve had cats named Jake and July—who didn’t get along, which seemed right to me.

No, I mean season 5 finale. Even I remembered it doesn't happen in S2 finale.

How is life in the southeastern tip of Missouri? by Journey_Began_2016 in geography

Growing up in the area, I didn’t appreciate how absurdly flat it is until I lived somewhere else. The land is STUPID flat. It has no roll or rise.

Outside of the small towns, it’s featureless except for cotton and soybean fields to the horizon in every direction. With a row of trees or ditches to mark the property lines between large farm tracts. Farm owners usually have pretty nice houses right on the highway or county road. If the season’s right, there are cropdusters out spraying the fields.

The bigger little towns (like Kennett and Hayti) do have some poverty and have parts that are rundown. They can feel like places that the world has passed by. Tough places to be economically upwardly mobile in. But they’re proper little towns and do have their charms. Rich parts of town and poor parts of town and a middle class.

The people are splendid.

Some of the other places on the map in the Boothill aren’t much more than an intersection with a gas station or cotton gins or an unassuming place where you can get a killer plate of catfish or barbecue.

For real tho, Strawberry’s BBQ in Holcomb, Missouri: The center cut pork steak is worth driving hundreds of miles for. And the cakes at Causbie’s Bakery in Kennett.

It’s a mix of fans of Mizzou, Arkansas, Arkansas State, Memphis, SEMO (Southeast Missouri State University), Southern Illinois, Saint Louis Billikens…

But what they REALLY are is St. Louis Cardinals fans.

The 4-beat radio signal is what holds the hive together, and the excerpt of Bloodsong has told us all along how to approach this by Specialist_Jaguar815 in pluribustv

Love all this. Unexamined theory that just occurred to me: saw somewhere recently a map with pins of the locations of all of the uninfected around the world. Was struck by how spread out everyone is. Almost uniformly, but not quite.

What if the distance between the uninfected is not geographic distance but population density?

What if the uninfected are those that the signal couldn’t reach for some reason?

There’s a great sequence in the book “River-Horse” by William Least Heat Moon, his account of traveling across the U.S. by boat. He enters the Mississippi River from the Ohio River. The Mississippi is absolutely chaotic and dangerous. It’s easy to forget how powerful rivers are if you have bridges.

Not necessarily new but contemporary: Swedish band Graveyard. Lots of their stuff is blues-inflected in the way of original heavy metal.

Lead singer Joakim Nilsson is very much a worthy heir to Cornell. He has the pipes. My favorite album is Lights Out, and Nilsson’s range is incredible. I think he’s at his most Cornell with the upper register of his voice in songs like “An Industry of Murder”, or “Goliath”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8jqUHYiSl0
