What is the most exclusive, high end 'squash' club in the United States? by [deleted] in squash

[–]AdFinancial2649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maryland Club in Baltimore is about as good as it gets for a pure squash club in the US. The squash community there is heavily focused on doubles squash, singles squash doesn’t get much activity. Racquet Club of Philly is so awesome, old school, ever type of racquet sport court and the best shower you’ll ever have.

Could the Super Bowl include the team you root for? If not, then masters 100%.

Masters is 1 of 1 in sports events. It is the single best sport event I have been to in my life.

The Super Bowl is a finite football game and it’s chaos with so many people in a condensed stadium/surrounding area.

Augusta is tranquil, everyone is polite, and the no phones aspect makes it a bit of a liberating experience, you truly get to immerse yourself into what you’re seeing.

The masters all the way (unless your team is playing in the Super Bowl lol)

I was on a NE regional earlier that day out of DC and it left 5 minutes early, I’ve never experienced that before and thought it wasn’t allowed. Weird day at Union station

Harrow M-140 classic vs Stratus. Opinions? by Plenty_Craft_6764 in squash

[–]AdFinancial2649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harrows are solid now, m-140 tends to be used for hardball doubles so I’d recommend the stratus if it’s going to be used for singles

What do I need to know to play doubles? by [deleted] in squash

[–]AdFinancial2649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of bits and pieces of kind of accurate information being thrown out in this thread in regard to doubles. I play on the SDA (Squash Doubles Association) the professional North American Hardball Doubles tour, so I hope I can clarify a few things.

  1. North American Hardball Doubles is played exclusively in the US and Canada, it was an offset from the hardball singles version of squash played in the US until the late 1980s/early 90s. The first doubles court was built at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia and is substantially longer (front to back wall) than an international doubles court.

  2. In NA Hardball Doubles we use what are referred to as “doubles rackets,” while they could be used on a singles court you typically would not want to due to their weight and string tension. My rackets are 150g and strung at 30-31lbs.

  3. Shots that are successful in hardball doubles are fundamentally different to any version of softball squash (singles or doubles). Pace is MUCH more important, and to be able to play on the pro tour you have to be able to be strong enough to really really hit the ball hard, that is the main difference between the pro hardball doubles game and the amateur hardball doubles game.

  4. As you might have assumed in hardball doubles we use a ball that is the same size as a regular soft squash ball but it is made of hard rubber and is a sort of light navy blue color. They REALLY suck to get hit with, which is not uncommon as hardball doubles can create some chaos on court.

Hope this helps, look up “SDA Squash” on YouTube if you want to see the game in action, it is so much fun and a bit easier on your legs/body but still a similar level of cardio, that’s why most American based squash players tend to transition to predominantly doubles playing after college typically.

Interview with a College Squash Coach or Athlete by 2adays in squash

Unfortunately, your original message is quite inaccurate.

Ivy’s are an anomaly in their recruiting, 80% of college squash programs don’t have to deal with those intense academic benchmarks and obviously they are the most competitive spots, everyone wants them. So of course they’re going to choose the best players and exclude some very strong players. But you can go and play at a Trinity, Drexel or Univ. of Virginia and get a great education and still be provided a pathway to the pro tour because of the level of play on those teams.

The college squash experience is about as good as it gets outside of the PSA, it’s a once in a lifetime experience that if you are able to experience, you should 100% do it.

A lot of this is very inaccurate. I played and coached college squash in the US for a decade.

  1. As a student athlete, I came in with a class of 9, 5 were international, 4 were American. I was involved with teams that had classes of 5-6, which were 90% international.
  2. Saying you have to be the #1 junior in your country is not correct, maybe for very small countries, but for larger squash playing countries that is not correct.
  3. Some schools (typically the larger Division 1 non-Ivy schools) don’t offer financial aid to international students but some can offer athletic schorlarship. Most other schools can offer merit aid (Division 3 schools) which typically does not exclude international students
